Notes: Summary We have constructed a three-channel differential SQUID magnetometer for the simultaneous measurement of the three orthogonal components of the magnetic field in the same location. The structure of the device is described and MCG data measured are shown. Interference effects between the channels are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto Si confrontano i magnetocardiogrammi misurati in un caso di infarto miocardico anterolaterale con i corrispondenti magnetocardiogrammi simulati.
Notes: Summary The MCGs measured in a case of an anterolateral myocardial infarction were compared with the corresponding simulated MCGs. The most distinctive changes in the measured MCGs were observed in the upper and lower parts of the thorax as predicted by the simulation.

Notes: Summary Magnetic-susceptibility plethysmography (MSPG) is a new method proposed for monitoring cardiac-volume changes. The measurement principle and recent work by other investigators are reviewed. The effect of the cardiac-related motion of the anterior chest wall on the MSPG signal is studied. The results suggest that the motion of the chest-wall-air boundary may contribute significantly (∼75%) to the MSPG signal when recorded near the heart.

Notes: Summary Somatosensory evoked magnetic fields were compared with corresponding electric scalp potentials in order to study their neural sources. Mappings of the magnetic responses showed activity at the primary and secondary somatosensory cortices. Additional sources besides these areas seem to be involved in the generation of the somatosensory vertex scalp potentials.

Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto Le sorgenti di risposte uditive magnetiche ed electtriche stimolate sono state formate con dipoli a corrente multipli.
Notes: Summary The sources of auditory evoked electric and magnetic responses were modelled with multiple current dipoles. The activity at the auditory cortices, 2.6 cm beneath the skull, explains the observed $$\overline {N100m}$$ field distribution. An additional current source near the vertex is needed to explain the corresponding potential distributions. The locations of the current sources of $$\overline {N100m}$$ did not show any systematic dependence on the tonal frequency.

Notes: Summary Voluntary limb movements are preceded by MEG shifts beginning even as early as 1.2 s before the movement. These shifts reverse polarity above the cortical motor representation area of the limb concerned.

Notes: Abstract Objective: To investigate the effect of steroid treatment in the late phase of primary acute lung injury (ALI) with special emphasis on pneumococcal pneumonia. Design: Retrospective study. Setting: Multidisciplinary intensive care unit (ICU) in a university hospital. Patients: Of 31 patients with primary ALI requiring mechanical ventilation for more than 10 days, 16 were treated with methylprednisolone and 15 served as controls. Measurements and results: Steroid and control groups were comparable regarding demographic data, APACHE II score, Multiple Organ Dysfunction Score (MODS), and PaO2/FiO2-ratio on admission to ICU. The mean start of steroid therapy was 9.7 days after establishment of respiratory failure, and values for control patients were registered on day 10. The PaO2/FiO2 ratio improved significantly within 3 days after the start of steroid therapy, and MODS and C-reactive protein decreased concurrently. No differences in mortality, in length of ICU stay, or in length of mechanical ventilation were detectable. In a subgroup analysis, for patients with Streptococcus pneumoniae pneumonia, beneficial change in physiological variables was evident. Conclusions: In patients with primary ALI, steroid therapy, started 10 days after the start of mechanical ventilation, improves gas exchange and is associated with a decrease in multiorgan dysfunction.

Notes: Abstract. Objective: To evaluate with electromyography the incidence and the time of appearance of neuromuscular abnormality in patients with systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and/or sepsis. Design: Follow-up study. Setting: Intensive care unit of Helsinki University Hospital, Finland. Patients: Nine mechanically ventilated patients with SIRS and/or sepsis. Interventions: Electromyography and conduction velocity measurements on the 2nd–5th day after admission to the intensive care unit. Measurements and results: In all nine patients electromyography revealed signs of neuromuscular abnormality. The means of compound muscle action potential amplitudes of the median and ulnar nerves were decreased. Fibrillation was observed in four patients out of nine. Conclusion: Because neuromuscular abnormalities seem to develop earlier than previously reported, electroneuromyography should be used more frequently as a diagnostic test.

Notes: Summary A long auditory stimulus elicits a magnetic evoked response in the human brain, consisting of transient deflections followed by a sustained response. The distributions of the magnetic fields indicate that the auditory evoked transient response at a latency of 100 ms as well as the auditory sustained response are generated at and around the primary auditory cortex.
