Conclusions In continuous mercerization units, during the alkali recirculation process, oxidative degradation of the hemicellulose contained in it takes place, plus an increase in the carbonyl group and carboxyl group content of the hemicellulose, in the amount of 0.75 and 2.00 moles/kg, respectively. A reduction of the low-molecular-weight degradation products of hemicellulose in the mercerization alkali can be attained by reducing the press-out of the alkali cellulose, and also by development of a continous method of mercerizing with the calculated amount of alkali.
