    Notes: Time-dependent coupled mode theory is used to investigate the stability of phase-locked semiconductor laser arrays. The output of individual array elements is dynamically unstable and exhibits large amplitude chaotic pulsations. The total output initially exhibits damped relaxation oscillations and then settles down to a quasi-steady state characterized by small amplitude fluctuations. The theory predicts both the pulsation frequency and the phase lock-in time of the array.

    Notes: Erbium-doped silica glasses prepared by the sol–gel process are desirable for applications in high-power lasers and integrated optical devices. However, its fluorescence could be quenched due to the high hydroxyl (OH−) content. Although this OH− content can be greatly reduced through special gas treatment [Y. Zhou, S. S. Wang, H. L. Liu, Y. L. Lam, Y. C. Chan, and C. H. Kam, EEE J. 8, 109 (1996).], the fluorescence is still considered weak for practical applications. We have used sol–gel aluminum codoping to increase the solubility of the Er3+ ions in a silica glass host and, consequently, significantly enhanced the fluorescence intensity of Er3+-doped sol–gel glass to the extent suitable for practical usage. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A theoretical characterization of the guided-mode resonance properties of planar dielectric waveguide gratings is presented. Efficient exchange of energy between forward and backward propagating diffracted waves is shown to be possible with smooth line shapes. The linewidths of the resonances can be controlled by the grating modulation amplitude. Due to the inherent separation between the TE and TM modes associated with the waveguide grating, these elements can provide polarization separation. Applications to polarization sensitive filtering and to electro-optic switching are suggested. The guided-mode resonance filter represents a basic new optical element.

    Notes: Background : Irritable bowel syndrome is a common condition seen in Western countries. In Asia, however, it is less known and even less studied.Aim : To determine the prevalence and social impact of irritable bowel syndrome as well as the health-seeking behaviour of irritable bowel syndrome patients in TaiwanMethods : Using the modified Rome II questionnaire, a survey was carried out in a population receiving physical check-up (n = 2865).Results : The prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome in Taiwan was 22.1% and 17.5% (κ = 0.73) according to the Rome II and I criteria, respectively. No gender difference was found between subjects with and without irritable bowel syndrome symptoms. Irritable bowel syndrome subjects were likely to undertake an excessive number of physician-visits (P 〈 0.01). Such subjects were often absent from work/school, with more days of absenteeism than irritable bowel syndrome-free subjects (P 〈 0.01). They also suffered obvious sleep disturbance (P 〈 0.01). Nearly half of the irritable bowel syndrome subjects were ‘consulters’, and they were more likely to have frequent physician-visits, suffer from work/school absenteeism, and endure sleep disturbance and bowel symptoms than irritable bowel syndrome nonconsulters (P 〈 0.05).Conclusions : Irritable bowel syndrome is common in a Chinese population of Taiwan. Similar to irritable bowel syndrome in the West, it also involves significant social and medical burdens. However, in the irritable bowel syndrome subjects of Taiwan there is no gender difference, and more irritable bowel syndrome subjects will seek physician consultations, which may be due to Taiwan's easily accessible and affordable heath care facilities.

    Notes: : The AGNPS (AGricultural NonPoint Source) model was evaluated for predicting runoff and sediment delivery from small watersheds of mild topography. Fifty sediment yield events were monitored from two watersheds and five nested subwater-sheds in East Central Illinois throughout the growing season of four years. Half of these events were used to calibrate parameters in the AGNPS model. Average calibrated parameters were used as input for the remaining events to obtain runoff and sediment yield data. These data were used to evaluate the suitability of the AGNPS model for predicting runoff and sediment yield from small, mild-sloped watersheds.An integrated AGNPS/GIS system was used to efficiently create the large number of data input changes necessary to this study. This system is one where the AGNPS model was integrated with the GRASS (Geographic Resources Analysis Support System) GIS (Geographical Information System) to develop a decision support tool to assist with management of runoff and erosion from agricultural watersheds. The integrated system assists with the development of input GIS layers to AGNPS, running the model, and interpretation of the results.

    Notes: The effect of structural modifications on the enzyme-binding capacity of collagen has been studied using p-galactosidase (E. coli K1 2) immobilized to collagen membranes. The immobilization process employs simple and inexpensive techniques to bind the enzyme to collagen through direct protein-protein interaction. The tertiary structure of the collagen matrix was modified by cross-linking with the difunctional reagent, glutaraldehyde, or by a natural cross-linking process associated with aging. Such modifications were found to markedly reduce the enzyme (β-galactosidase)-binding capacity of collagen films. The deleterious effect of cross-linking on the binding capacity of collagen was shown to be completely reversed by proteolytic enzyme treatment of aged films but only partly so for glutaraldehyde-treated films.

    Notes: As a prelude to an eventual pilot plant scale-up of the collagen-β-galaotosidase system, mass transfer, kinetic, pH and temperature profiles were completed. The diffusional studies proved useful in elucidating the role of internal and external mass transfer in the collagen system. External mass transfer was negligible for a residence time in the range of 41.2 to 4.1 × 10−3 min or a flow rate of 48–495 ml/min. Internal transport influence increased with increasing film thickness. A thin film (0.4 mil or 10.16 × 10−3 mm) produced the highest activity per gram of complex. It is not advisable to use a film thinner than 0.4 mil with a bench-top reactor since the film will lack sufficient mechanical strength. Separate pH and temperature profiles were obtained with respective optima being 3.5 and 55°C. An activation energy of 10.7 kcal/mole was calculated by means of an Arrhenius plot. A kinetic study showed that the Michaelis constants for both the immobilized and soluble β-galactosidase were similar, 0.066 and 0.060M, respectively.

    Notes: Catalase was immobilized on collagen membrane. The inactivation of immobilized catalase by 0.01M and 0.1M H2O2 was reported. After the initial stage of inactivation, a stable catalatic activity as measured in a continuous flow of 0.01M H2O2 through a modular reactor was observed for longer than 20 days (2.6 min residence time). The regeneration of catalatic activity from the O.1M H2O2 inactivated catalase occurred after incubating the inactivated modular reactor with 0.01M phosphate buffer, pH 6.8. The amount of activity regenerated is directly proportional to the time of incubation.
