    Notes: Magnetic garnet films of composition (A, Bi)3(Fe, B)5 O12 are grown by liquid phase epitaxy on [111] oriented substrates of Gd3 Ga5 O12, where A=yttrium or lutetium and B=aluminum or gallium. The ferrimagnetic resonance (FMR) of in-plane magnetized films is studied by analyzing the modulation of light, which passes the film parallel to the film normal. Modulation efficiencies up to 1.8% at 2.9 GHz are observed at a wavelength of 0.633 μm. From the measured modulation intensities the precession angles of the FMR are derived. The dependence of the precession cone on the excitation frequency or on the external induction shows a foldover effect which, however, is smaller than for the FMR of perpendicularly magnetized films. Maximum precession angles up to 14° are achieved and the experiments indicate that saturation occurs. Light modulation is also observed at the first harmonic frequency, but the intensity is about 300 times weaker than at the fundamental frequency. ©1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Garnet films of composition Lu3−xBixFe5−yGayO12 are grown by liquid-phase epitaxy on [111]-oriented substrates of gadolinium gallium garnet. Faraday rotation and saturation magnetization are measured as a function of substitution levels, which range up to x=1.4 and y=1.8, respectively. Nonreciprocal propagation of the TM0 is studied at a wavelength of 1.3 μm. It is shown that the difference between forward and backward propagation constants can be optimized using double layers with opposite sign of the Faraday rotation. Agreement between experiments and calculations is excellent. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Non-reciprocal rib waveguide structures can be used to realize integrated optical isolators. In this paper, we propose a concrete design for a Mach–Zehnder interferometer type isolator for TM modes. Just one of the arms, which are of equal length, is a non-reciprocal magneto-optic waveguide. The rest of the interferometer is reciprocal. Required fabrication tolerances are estimated, and the entire isolator is simulated by applying a finite difference beam propagation method.

    Notes: Abstract Using a reflection magneto-optic technique we have investigated natural inhomogeneities and artificial structures in YBCO thin films exposed to an external magnetic field. The artificial structures were mechanically scratched by scanning a diamond tip with different loading over the film surface. Alternatively planar structures with reduced oxygen content could be patterned by heating the YBCO film with a focused laser beam in nitrogen atmosphere. Depending on the laser annealing parameters different screening properties concerning the applied magnetic field could be achieved. As a magneto-optically active layer we used EuS films evaporated on glass as well as bismuth- and gallium-doped lutetium-iron-garnet films grown onto (111) oriented gadolinium-gal lium-gar net substrates by liquid phase epitaxy. In contrast to measurements with EuS films that show only weak faraday rotation for temperatures higher than 20 K the magneto-optic studies have been expanded to about 60 K by using the garnet films.
