    Notes: Abstract Chromosomal mutants of Alcaligenes eutrophus unable to grow with molecular hydrogen as the energy source also failed to grow with nitrate as the terminal electron acceptor or as a nitrogen source. The mutants (Hno−) (i) formed neither soluble nor particulate hydrogenase antigens, (ii) expressed only about 50% the wild type level of ribulosebisphosphate carboxylase activity, and (iii) transported nickel, an essential constituent of active hydrogenase, at a significantly lower rate than wild type cells. Moreover, the mutants grew very slowly with urea as nitrogen source and did not express urease. Growth on formamide was also affected and formamidase activity was induced to only a very low level. Growth of the Hno− mutants on succinate, glutamate, fumarate, and malate was significantly slower than wild type, and a reduced rate of succinate incorporation into the mutant cells was demonstrated. The highly pleiotropic phenotype of Hno− mutants is indicative of a chromosomal gene with a considerable physiological importance. It affected the expression of both chromosomal and megaplasmid encoded systems of energy, carbon, and nitrogen metabolism. Thus, the hno mutation restricts the metabolic versatility but does not affect the basic metabolic functions of the organism.

    Notes: Abstract Transport of nickel ions was studied in Alcaligenes eutrophus. Two transport systems for nickel ions exist to satisfy the nickel demand for the lithotrophic hydrogen metabolism. A major nickel transport activity exhibited an apparent affinity constant (K m) of 17 μM nickel chloride. This activity was competitively inhibited by Mg2+, Mn2+, Zn2+, and Co2+. A minor nickel transport activity was determined in the presence of high (0.8 mM) magnesium. This activity was not inhibited by Zn2+ or Mn2+; its K′ m was determined to be 0.34 μM nickel chloride. These kinetics suggested a second transport system in A. eutrophus. The membrane potential of A. eutrophus was decreased upon the addition of ammonium ions leading to a decreased nickel transport. This inhibition could be reversed by fructose or by hydrogen indicating an energy dependent nickel transport. Protonophores inhibited the nickel transport. However, inhibitors of ATP synthase like dicyclohexylcabodimide or venturicidin had little or no effect on nickel transport. These data indicated that the transport was coupled to the proton motive force.

    Notes: Magnetic garnet films of composition (Nd,Lu,Bi)3(Fe,Al,Ga)5O12 are grown by liquid-phase epitaxy on [111] oriented substrates of gadolinium gallium garnet. They have positive uniaxial anisoptropy and support lattices of parallel stripe domains. A monomode optical rib waveguide is prepared by photolithography and ion-beam etching parallel to the (112¯) direction, which is the preferred direction of the stripe domains. A magnetic domain pattern can be created such that a domain wall is located at the rib center while the adjacent walls stick to the flanks of the rib. At a wavelength of 1.3 μm a nonreciprocal phase shift of the guided fundamental transverse electric mode is observed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Non-reciprocal rib waveguide structures can be used to realize integrated optical isolators. In this paper, we propose a concrete design for a Mach–Zehnder interferometer type isolator for TM modes. Just one of the arms, which are of equal length, is a non-reciprocal magneto-optic waveguide. The rest of the interferometer is reciprocal. Required fabrication tolerances are estimated, and the entire isolator is simulated by applying a finite difference beam propagation method.

    Notes: Abstract We investigate a structure consisting of a magneto-optic multimode waveguide and two monomode waveguides serving as in- and outlets. The geometrical dimensions of the multimode waveguide can be adjusted such that the guided modes interfere constructively in forward direction and destructively for backward propagation.     Notes: Abstract For mode fields of integrated optical waveguides with piecewise constant and rectangular permittivity profile, Maxwell's equations reduce to the two-dimensional Helmholtz wave equation, supplemented by continuity requirements on the boundaries between different media. Two basic components of the mode field are expanded into factorizing harmonic or exponential functions, separately on each rectangular region. We determine approximations for guided modes and propagation constants by means of a minimization procedure based on a least squares expression for the mismatch in the continuity requirements. Results for the hybrid mode fields of typical sample waveguides classify this approach as competitive with and superior to alternative methods for vectorial mode analysis, although some open questions remain.

    Notes: Abstract Coupled mode theory is applied to an arrangement of three raised strip waveguides with a multimode central strip. We use semivectorial numerically computed modes of the three single isolated waveguides as a basis for propagating supermode analysis of the entire structure. The pronounced polarization dependence of the raised strip guides allows for the design of a conveniently short polarization splitter. We discuss design guidelines and estimate the fabrication tolerances. The accuracy of the coupled mode approach is assessed by comparison with rigorously computed supermodes for comparable two waveguide couplers. Both types of structures indicate the limits in the applicability of the coupled mode model.
