Notes: Silicon (100) substrates machined by chemo-mechanical-grinding (CMG) and chemicalmechanical-polishing (CMP) were investigated using atomic force microscopy, cross-sectionaltransmission electron microscopy and nanoindentation. It was found that the substrate surface afterCMG was slightly better than machined by CMP in terms of roughness. The transmission electronmicroscopy analysis showed that the CMG-generated subsurface was defect-free, but the CMPspecimen had a crystalline layer of about 4 nm in thickness on the top of the silicon lattice asevidenced by the extra diffraction spots. Nanoindentation results indicated that there exists a slightdifference in mechanical properties between the CMG and CMP machined substrates

Notes: Grind-hardening was done on Steel AISI 1066 with a conventional surface grinder and acorundum grinding wheel, and research was conducted to probe into structures and properties of thehardened layer under varied depth of cut and cooling conditions. Results show that the hardened layerdo not change noticeably in their martensitic structures and micro-hardness, which is ranged between810[removed info]870HV; But when the depth of cut increased or the dry grinding technique is adopted, theconcentration of martensites and carbonides becomes lower, while the amount of residual austenitesincreases, and the completely hardened zone gets thicker. This conclusion serves as an experimentalbasis for the active control of properties of the grind-hardened layer of Steel AISI 1066

Notes: Abstract. In this paper the formation of detonation in H $_2$ -O $_2$ /He/Ar mixtures at elevated initial pressures was investigated in an initiation tube for a detonation driver with an exploding wire as the ignition source. In most experiments the detonation wave was formed by a DDT process in which a reactive shock wave accelerates behind the leading shock wave and eventually leads to the onset of detonation. The onset position was found to be at the leading shock wave or behind it. Only in very sensitive mixtures at high initial pressure the direct initiation of detonation was observed. The influence of ignition energy, initial pressure and composition on the detonation induction distance was determined. The results show that the detonation induction distance increases with the decrease of ignition energy and initial pressure and with the increase of the mole fraction of helium or argon. With the same mole fraction, argon increases the induction distance more than helium. In the facility utilized the DDT upper and lower limits of hydrogen in H $_2$ -O $_2$ mixtures are in the ranges from 36 to 40 % and from 78 to 82 %, respectively, and the upper limits for helium and argon in stoichiometric H $_2$ -O $_2$ mixtures are 40 % and 36 %, respectively. High pressure peaks generated by the DDT process were measured, especially in mixtures near the DDT limits. Statistical results show that such peak pressures can be up to 6 times of the CJ-pressures.

Notes: Abstract A recently developed method for the dynamic response of nonhomogeneous composite material subjected to in plane loading is further extended to accommodate the case of anti-plane loading. It is assumed that the composite material is orthotropic and all the material properties vary arbitrarily along the thickness direction. In the analysis, the elastic region is modeled using a series of layers of infinite length, with each layer having slightly different properties. By utilizing the Laplace transform and Fourier transform technique, the general solution for each layer is derived. The singular integral equations of the entire elastic region are then obtained through introducing the mechanical boundary and layer interface conditions via the flexibility/stiffness matrix approach. The integral equations are solved by weighted residual value method. As the numerical illustrations, the dynamic stress intensity factors for a cracked metal-ceramic joint with a functionally graded interlayer under sudden applied stress on the joint surface are presented. The results demonstrate that there existing optimal nonhomogeneity parameter at which the stress intensity factor is minimized.
