    Notes: Structures and magnetic properties of Co/Al multilayers prepared by means of planar magnetron sputtering were investigated. We compare the results with those of the previously reported films fabricated by electron-beam deposition. It is found that remarkable differences exist between the films synthesized by the two methods. For example, the sputtered multilayers show a transition from in-plane to out-of-plane magnetization at a crossover thickness of Co layer from 14 to 7 A(ring). For samples with tCo ≤ 6 A(ring), the Co layers were discontinuous. Formation of the CoAl compound in the samples has not been observed.

    Notes: Macroscopic instabilities are governed by transport-determined plasma profiles and transport, in turn, is affected by instabilities. It is clear that neither transport process nor the behavior of instabilities can be treated in isolation. A model is developed for investigating the effects of the instabilities on global energy confinement in tokamaks. The results clearly demonstrate that magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities coupled with the transport process change not only the value of global energy confinement time, but also, perhaps more importantly, the energy confinement scaling law. While considering MHD effects, global energy confinement becomes sensitively dependent on the boundary transport conditions, and the cases with and without MHD stability can result in quite different parameter behavior of the global energy confinement. Such coupling should be considered when attempts are made to analyze the global energy confinement in tokamaks. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report on the fabrication of bulk samples of photorefractive polymers using the injection molding technique. The photorefractive properties of these materials are evaluated by four-wave mixing and two-beam coupling experiments. Samples with good optical quality, high diffraction efficiency, and net optical gain are obtained. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We measure at different wavelengths the linear and nonlinear optical properties of a new chromophore for photorefractive applications by means of frequency-dependent ellipsometry experiments. We show that the optical dispersion of the refractive index modulation responsible for the high diffraction efficiency in low Tg polymers can be described by a two-level model. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The electron injection process, which limits the electroluminescent performance of organic devices, has been enhanced tremendously by inserting a layer of LiF with appropriate thickness between the cathode and a quinacridone doped organic layer. Devices with an Al/LiF cathode demonstrated a luminance in excess of 20 000 cd/m2 and an external quantum efficiency of 3%, which is comparable to devices with a Mg/LiF cathode. These devices show maximum luminance of 45 000 cd/m2 prior to failure in continuous bias operation. For the same LiF thickness, the operating voltage for devices with Al/LiF was lower than the corresponding operating voltage for devices with Mg/LiF or Mg alone. Tunneling theory is used to explain this enhancement. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report on light scattering measurements in guest/host photorefractive polymers doped with different polar dyes as a function of temperature and sample composition. Crystallization processes of the polar dye are found to follow a nucleation and growth mechanism. The structure and melting point of the polar dye, the storage temperature, and the amount of plasticizer are shown to exert a major influence on the shelf lifetime of the samples. New composites with high efficiency and long shelf lifetime are presented. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Balancing the charge injection plays an important role not only in fluorescence-based organic light-emitting devices, but also in the performance of the recently introduced organic electrophosphorescent devices. By achieving a better balance in the injected charges, it is possible to fabricate devices based on the pure red emitter 2, 3, 7, 8, 12, 13, 17, 18-octaethyl-21H, 23H-porphine, PtOEP, with external quantum efficiency close to 9%. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Aims:  A method to test the axial and transverse tensile properties of skin was developed in order to improve our understanding of the mechanical behavior of skin, and how it changes with the scarring response. This experimental technique was used to investigate the bidirectional mechanics of skin in the juvenile Yorkshire pig model.Methods:  Skin samples were taken upon sacrifice, and all subcutaneous tissue was carefully removed via dissection. Dumbbell-shaped specimens were obtained from the skin using a custom designed stainless steel punch, to provide consistent geometry, and to avoid stress concentrations that can result from specimen gripping. Samples were taken in the axial (cranial-caudal) and transverse (dorsal-ventral) directions. Specimens were secured in an INSTRON universal test machine with serrated soft tissue grips, elongated to a desired preload, subjected to a 10% elongation and held for a 4-min isometric period. They were then returned to the original length and failed in tension at constant velocity.Results:  This method of sample preparation indicated high repeatability in specimen geometry, showing standard deviations of 2% and 3% in gauge length and width, respectively (N = 12). Furthermore, no slippage was observed at the skin/grip interface, and all failures occurred within the specimen gauge length.Conclusions:  This technique shows great promise for evaluating the viscoelastic and failure properties of skin, scar tissue, and pathologic scarring. Combining this biomechanical method with our parallel studies in molecular biology and biochemistry can likely produce correlations between constituent material organization and the mechanical properties of the tissue, as well as provide valuable information for the design of bioengineered tissue constructs.Acknowledgments:  Alberta Ingenuity Fund, CIHR, and NSERC

    Notes: Intercropping and soil amendment experiments were conducted to determine if they reduced populations of Pseudomonas solanacearum and bacterial wilt of tomato at the Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center (AVRDC) and at three other locations in Taiwan. At AVRDC, intercropping tomato with cowpea planted within the row significantly reduced bacterial wilt (P 〈 0.05) compared to when tomato was cropped alone. The P. solanacearum population in soil was not affected by intercropping with cowpea, soybean, or Welsh onion.At the same site, however, a preplanting soil amendment consisting of urea (200 kg ha−1 N) and CaO (5000 kg ha−1) significantly reduced the pathogen population and tomato bacterial wilt (P 〈 0.001). The effect of the soil amendment was not consistent when applied to soil from three other sites in Taiwan; in soil from two sites no reduction of the pathogen population occurred. At these sites, tomato bacterial wilt in the field was not reduced significantly after amending. In comparison with a non-amended control, the addition of only CaO reduced the P. solanacearum population in AVRDC soil significantly (P 〈 0.05), but the reduction was significantly greater when the complete soil amendment was added. In contrast, urea alone did not affect the survival of P. solanacearum in the soil. In a greenhouse experiment with AVRDC soil, P. solanacearum was undetectable 2 weeks after soil amendment, but in the same treatment tomato yield was significantly reduced by 48% (P 〈 0.05) compared with non-amended treatments. The suppressive effect of the soil amendment on the P. solanacearum population was probably due to the generation of one or several toxic substances during the transformation of urea in the presence of CaO.
