Notes: Abstract Transient signals measured with a pulsed rf-optical pumping method are used to determine longitudinal relaxation rates for Sr+ ions (even isotopes) in noble gas buffers. Depolarization cross sections of the electronic spin in the Sr+52 S 1/2 ground state for binary collisions with rare gas atoms are deduced. The results for σ(Sr+52 S 1/2) in Å2 are (at temperatures between 374 and 449 °K): 2·10−5(He),4·10−5(Ne), 5.7·10−3(Ar), 1.8·10−2(Kr), and 4.0·10−2(Xe). These cross sections for the Sr+ ion are about two to three orders of magnitude larger than the corresponding ones for the isoelectronic neutral Rb atom. The large increase of the Sr+ relaxation rates is explained with the relaxation mechanism of spin-orbit coupling, taking into account two “indirect” effects of the ionic charge: the increase in the gas kinetic cross sections and the more intimate collisions of the Sr+ ion with the noble gas atoms. The depolarization is shown to be predominantly due to short-range interactions. A contribution to the relaxation of the Sr+ ion from Sr+-noble gas molecule formation, induced by three-body or resonant two-body collisions, could not be established for applied pressuresp between 1.5 and 15 Torr of Ar, Kr, and Xe.

Notes: Abstract Optical pumping with the D2 resonance line can result in a zero2 S 1/2 ground state polarization at a particular buffer gas pressurep 0. For the even isotopes of Sr+ ions, the corresponding relaxation rate Γ1 of the dipolar polarization in the2 P 3/2 excited state can be calculated as a function of the mean lifetime τ of this state directly from the condition of zero2 S 1/2 ground state polarization. The calculation includes the branching decays of the 52 P 3/2 state to the 52 S 1/2 and 42 D 5/2,3/2 states, the collisional quenching from2 P and2 D states, and the diffusion of the Sr+ ions. From the calculated relaxation rate Γ1 and the measured value ofp 0, the cross sections for the destruction of the dipolar polarization in the2 P 3/2 state are obtained, σ1(Sr+52 P 3/2) in Å2: 72±9(He), 80±10(Ne), 124±15 (Ar), 148±18 (Kr), and 196±23 (Xe). The values of σ1 for the Sr+ ion are of comparable magnitude to those for the isoelectronic Rb atom.

Notes: Abstract With an intense, broadband multi-mode cw dye laser collisional studies of Hα fine-structure resonances with saturated absorption are extended to He buffer gas pressures larger than 30 mbar (0°C). The broadening and shift of the two prominent Hα(2P−3D) transitions are measured in a (He+4% H) gas discharge. The absolute magnitude and the differences in the width of the lines are explained theoretically by different inelastic fine-structure transfer cross sections which can also be deduced from the pressure effect data. Nuclear polarization of hydrogen atoms by Hα optical pumping and polarization transfer to the H(1S) ground state via Ly-α decay and further applications of the multimode laser are discussed.

Notes: Abstract A method for polarizing thermal ions in buffer gases directly by optical pumping is presented in detail. The production and storage of Sr+ (and Ba+) ions in noble gases, their diffusion and relevant collision processes are discussed. An arc discharge hollow cathode for the generation of intense ionic resonance lines is described. The Sr+ (52 S 1/2) and electron spin polarizations are treated by rate equations. Fitting the solutions to experimental data obtained from transient signals yields an estimate of a few times 103Å2 for the Sr+ion-electron spin exchange cross section.

Notes: Abstract Nuclear spin polarization in the 4f 146s 2 1 S 0 ground state of175Lu+(I=7/2) ions is achieved by optical pumping with the resonance line (1 S 0-1 P 1,λ=261.5 nm). Nuclear magnetic resonance of the free ions in He buffer gas yields for the magnetic dipole momentμ(175Lu)=2.2240(11)μ n (with diamagnetic correction). This value can be used for a more accurate determination of the magnetic dipole moments of other Lu isotopes from knownA factor ratios. A comparison with nuclear induction measurements in solids results in the chemical shiftsδ(LuB12)=−23(5)·10−4 andδ(LuSb)= −31(5)·10−4.

Observation of⩼gDF=± 1 transitions yields for the hyperfine splitting frequencyv hfs(9Be+, 1s 2 2s 2 S 1/2)=1250018(5) kHz. The result is discussed with regard to predictions of recent theoretical calculations and of the Fermi-Segré formula for the ground state hfs of the Li isoelectronic sequence.

Notes: Abstract The plasma line broadening of Hα fine-structure lines is investigated with Doppler-free saturation and polarization spectroscopy in He-H gas and are discharges at plasma densities of 108 cm−3 〈N≲1.4×1014 cm−3. With a single-mode laser, the shift and broadening of four resolved Hα fs lines are measured in a low pressure discharge forN〈1011 cm−3. With an intense, broadband multi-mode laser the plasma effects of Hα are investigated up toN=1.4×1014 cm−3 in a hollow cathode are. Calculations in the classical phase shift and impact approximations can explain the experimental data and peculiarities of the low-density plasma effects and show that the ions are the dominant perturbers. Ion dynamical effects, perturber mass and temperature dependence, are observed and interpreted. Applications of the nonlinear techniques to other H and D lines, other atoms, and for H and D plasma diagnostics are discussed.

Notes: Abstract In ten patients who received an epidural injection of 15 mg of nicomorphine, the compound was relatively slowly released from the epidural space and was found in plasma for approximately 1.5 h. Nicomorphine is relatively slowly metabolized into 6-nicotinoylmorphine and morphine. The rate of release is patient-dependent. The relative AUC values are 15.3% for nicomorphine, 23.9% for 6-nicotinoylmorphine and 60.8% for morphine. The mean clinical effect lasts for 18.2±10.1 h.

Notes: Abstract Optical pumping with theD 2 line is used to study the depolarization of the first excited2 P 3/2 states of alkaline earth ions and Yb+ ions in collisions with rare gas atoms. The deorientation cross sections for the even isotopes of Ba+ and Yb+ ions are obtained (in units of 10−16 cm2): rare gas He Ne Ar Kr Xeσ 1 (Ba+ 6p 2 P 3/2) 79(11) 89(13) 123(18) 152(22) 204(30)σ 1 (Yb+ 6p 2 P 3/2) 60(10) 62(9) 107(18) 133(17) 167(37) The cross sections are discussed in comparison with theoretical calculations and those of isoelectronic atoms. The comparison of the2 P 3/2 relaxation of even and odd (I=3/2) isotopes of Ba+ allows to draw conclusions on the nature of the depolarization interaction.
