Notes: Summary Ten patients with acromegaly were treated with the long-acting somatostatin analogue, Sandostatin (SMS 201-995, octreotide) for more than one year. Computerized tomography was performed before and on 4 different occasions during the treatment. Sella turcica volumes were calculated in nine patients and showed a gradual decrease in all, averaging 32%±14.6%,P〈0.001 at the end of the study, which is probably indicative of a simultaneous reduction in adenoma size.

Notes: Summary In normal subjects during 24-hours saline infusion, plasma prolactin showed a number of small rises during day and night. The mean night-time level was significantly higher than the day-time level (8.2 ±0.6 ng/ml as against 4.7±0.5 ng/ml). In 12 insulin-dependent diabetics the 24 h plasma prolactin pattern was identical to that found in normals. Somatostatin infusion (4 mg/24 h in normals; 2–6 mg/24 h in diabetics) had no effect on the 24 h plasma prolactin pattern in either normals or in diabetics.

Notes: Summary Serum thyrotropin (TSH) and growth hormone (GH) were measured in 24 women and 25 men with juvenile diabetes and in comparable normals. Samples were obtained in the postprandial state at 11 a.m., during a 24 h period of daily life and after thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) stimulation. The diurnal TSH rhythm in the diabetics was similar to that found in normals. The TSH values at the nadir of the diurnal TSH rhythm (11 a. m.) were identical in diabetics and normals; in addition there was no difference in the TSH response to TRH. No sex dependent difference of the basal TSH level or of TSH response to TRH was present. Serum GH was higher in women than in men, and higher in diabetics than in normals. The study indicates that diabetes mellitus is not likely to be a disease accompanied by a generalized hypo-thalamic dysfunction.
