Notes: Abstract Collision broadening of the 3.39 μm methane line is investigated experimentally using saturated absorption spectroscopy and theoretically by numerical integration of the quantum mechanical equations of motion for a single molecule moving in a standing wave field. The line profiles are calculated on the basis of a simple collision model. It is shown that the line widths are in general smaller than the relaxation rate and the line profiles are not Lorentzian. Self broadening as well as broadening by H2, Ar, Xe is treated. The elastic scattering cross sections which the calculated line profiles contain as free parameters are determined by comparison with measured line widths.

Notes: Abstract We report harmonic mixing experiments between a 72 GHz mm-wave and 3.7 THz NH3-laser radiation, as well as between 3.7 THz and the 10 μm R(30) CO2-laser line. For the former mixing a semiconductor diode is used, while for the higher frequencies an MIM tunnel diode served as the nonlinear element. Beat signals are of sufficient signal to noise ratio for precise optical frequency measurement.

Notes: Abstract An infrared frequency measurement chain is reported, the simplicity of which allows phase-coherent frequency measurements up to 30 THz. Frequency measurement is demonstrated on the 10P(28) line of the Lamb-dip stabilized13CO2-laser.

Notes: Abstract We report on measurements of periodic and chaotic self-pulsing beyond the second threshold of far-infrared NH3 lasers. While the instabilities of the 81 μm14NH3 laser follow a simple pattern, for the 374 μm15NH3 laser different pulsing properties are found in different parameter ranges. Pulses under conditions of high pumping power are measured in detail, in view of possible applications of these coherent, high-repetition rate far-infrared pulsed lasers.

Notes: Abstract We report measurements on the phase dynamics of a detuned single mode laser which has in the past shown correspondence to the complex Lorenz equation. The corresponding ranges of periodic pulsing, of detuned chaos and of windows within the chaotic domain are investigated.

Notes: Abstract An eleven-pass, two-wavelength interferometer for density measurements within the ionisation relaxation region of rare-gas shock waves has been developed. The minimum detectable electron density is 1·1014 cm−3. A method to calculate the electron temperature profile across the relaxation region from the measured density profiles is described.

Notes: Abstract Saturated absorption of CO2-laser radiation in HCOOH gas was measured as a function of pressure. A simple rate equation model is used to calculate the saturation photon densities. It is concluded from these data that vibrational relaxation is collision predominant, and that decreased absorption, observed at high pressure and high radiation intensities, cannot be interpreted as diffusion bounded vibrational relaxation.

Notes: Abstract Dynamics of the intensity and optical field amplitude of a coherently pumped far-infrared NH3-laser are measured and characterized. The experimental findings in certain parameter ranges closely follow the dynamics of the Lorenz model and its generalization for laser systems. Similarities and some specific differences are found in geometrical or statistical characterizations of the attractors. The experimental results are also consistent with the results of a model of optically pumped three-level lasers which takes into account the presence of a multiplicity of velocity groups as well as three-level coherence effects. For a certain region in parameter space, this far more complex model with a much larger phase space produces results similar to the dynamics of the Lorenz model. The model also provides explanations of differences between the experimental results and results from the Lorenz model.
