Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Volcanic ashes, resulting from Plinian type eruptions, are regularly interbedded with fluvio-lacustrine successions of the Plio-Pleistocene Upper Webi Shebele Basin in the southeastern uplands of Ethiopia. Pumiceous and vitric ashes of rhyolitic composition dominate. Interbedded with the lacustrine succession are also scoriaceous ashes of alkali olivine basalt composition and minor amounts of mixed scoria. The majority of ashes interbedded with the lake sequence is primary air-fall material that underwent only minor degrees of reworking. Within the overlying fluviatile sequence primary ashes decrease in abundance, and crystalrich volcanoclastic deposits (»crystal tuffs«) take their place. Positive correlations between incompatible trace elements indicate a cogenetic origin for the silicic samples. Furthermore, these ashes show cycles of increase, followed by a rapid decrease in incompatible trace element contents with respect to stratigraphic position, which suggests eruption of a compositionally zoned magma with successively deeper tapping of the magma chamber, followed by a dormant stage of volcanism during which incompatible elements and volatile contents build up giving rise to the next eruptive cycle. During the lacustrine stage the volcanic eruptions, which probably had repose times of ≈ 5000 years, occurred during a period of relative tectonic quiescence before onset of the main faulting of the Ethiopian rift. Transgressive-regressive cycles of Pliocene Lake Gadeb are therefore related to regional climatic fluctuations rather than to regional volcano-tectonic events. Final fragmentation and drying out of the Pliocene lake shortly before 2.35 my may be related to a colder, drier late Pliocene climate, but is equally plausibly explained by erosional breaching of the lava dam through headward retreat of the Webi Shebele. The change from lacustrine to fluviatile deposition coincides with major rift faulting, local cessation of basaltic activity and a change from plinian to ignimbritic eruptions. The lacustrinefluviatile transition of the Upper Webi Shebele Basin is therefore attributed to major regional structural and volcanological changes.

Notes: Summary We have investigated the effect of alcoholic liver disease (ALD) on the metabolism of 7-ethoxycoumarin 0-deethylase in human liver microsomes. EROD activity was significantly reduced in tissue from ALD patients who smoked, compared to smoking controls. A similar trend was seen in non-smokers. These results have implications for the metabolism of environmental carcinogens.

Notes: Summary Plasma aspirin esterase activity and cholinesterase activity were reduced in patients with aspirin sensitive asthma and aspirin sensitive urticaria compared to asthmatic and dermatological controls. Phenylacetate (non specific) esterase activities, were however unaltered in these patients. The reason for the lower activity is uncertain but it does not appear to be due to genetically determined lower cholinesterase or due to the avoidance of aspirin by sensitive patients. A low aspirin esterase activity may be a contributory factor in precipitating these aspirin sensitive reactions.

Notes: Summary 1. The activities of the two kinetic components (high and low affinity) of the microsomal 0-deethylation of 7-ethoxycoumarin have been measured in liver from patients with alcoholic cirrhosis and in normals. 2. The activity (expressed as pmol 7-OH coumarin formed/mg microsomal protein/min) of both components of the enzyme was significantly lower in alcoholic cirrhosis (high affinity=3.27±1.18, low affinity 60.9±11.6) than in normals (high affinity 9.43±2.37, low affinity 111.3±9.2). 3. These results are further evidence that there is a broad impairment of hepatic microsomal mono-oxygenase activity in alcoholic cirrhosis.

Notes: Summary The efficacy of single doses (1.2 g) of soluble aspirin and aspirin tablets was determined in a randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind, parallel study in 90 patients (45 females) with postoperative pain after removal of impacted lower third molars. Also investigated was the relationship between plasma aspirin esterase activity and overall pain scores after both aspirin preparations. Patients reported significantly less pain (p〈0.001) after treatment with aspirin than after treatment with placebo. However, patients receiving soluble aspirin reported both an earlier onset and a longer duration of pain relief than those who received aspirin tablets. A significant correlation was observed between plasma aspirin esterase activity and overall pain scores after both soluble aspirin (r=0.57,p〈0.01) and aspirin tablets (r=0.51,p〈0.02). It is concluded that soluble aspirin is the preferred aspirin formulation for treating postoperative pain after third molar surgery and that plasma aspirin esterase activity is a determinant of a patient's analgesic response to aspirin in postoperative dental pain.
