Notizen: We implemented tip–sample distance control in a scanning evanescent microwave probe for nonlinear dielectric microscopy. With the analytic expression of the tip–sample capacitance as a function of tip–sample distance, we can quantitatively regulate the tip–sample separation and independently measure the dielectric nonlinearity by application of an ac bias voltage. Simultaneous imaging of topography and ferroelectric domains has been demonstrated on periodically poled LiNbO3 single crystals. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A theoretical model analysis for a recently developed scanning evanescent microwave microscope has been performed. The result enables a quantitative microscopy of local complex dielectric constant profiles for dielectric materials. Various experiments were performed and found to be in good agreement with the theoretical results. The estimation of intrinsic resolution of the microscope suggests that nanometer spatial resolution is achievable. System analysis gives a limiting sensitivity of about δε/ε∼1×10−5. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We have developed a means of tip–sample distance regulation for a scanning evanescent microwave microscope over conductive samples. Changes in resonant frequency and quality factor are measured, where changes in resonant frequency are related to the tip–sample capacitance and changes in quality factor are related to microwave absorption. With the analytical expression of the tip–sample capacitance as a function of tip–sample distance, we can quantitatively regulate the tip–sample separation. We demonstrated simultaneous noncontact imaging of topography and surface resistance with high spatial resolution. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A library of 256 differently doped thin films of (BaxSr1−x)TiO3 (where 0.5〈x〈1.0) was generated on a 1 in.×1 in. LaAlO3 substrate using multistep thin-film deposition techniques together with a quaternary masking strategy. Appropriate postannealing processing afforded high-quality epitaxial thin films. The microwave properties, i.e., dielectric constant and loss tangent, of samples in the library were characterized with a scanning-tip microwave near-field microscope at 1 GHz, and the results were found to be consistent with measurements made with interdigital electrodes. Specific dopants were found to significantly affect the dielectric constant and tangent loss. Tungsten, in particular, reduces the tangent loss. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A near-field microscope which operates in the rf/microwave frequency range is described. In this microscope, a scanning tunneling microscope (STM)-like tip rather than an aperture is used as a point-like evanescent field emitter. A spatial resolution of ∼5 μm (∼λ/100 000) is achieved in the current version. The design of the microscope as well as the principal factors which affect its performance are discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A new design of the vibrating reed apparatus for studying the high-resonant overtones of very small samples is described. Using the high Q (∼103) helical rf resonator as a capacitive transducer, great sensitivity has been obtained. The theoretical sensitivity of the detector is investigated with transmission-line theory, and the result shows that the Johnson-noise-limited sensitivity is proportional to the Q of the resonator instead of Q1/2, as is the case of lumped LC-tuned circuit analyses. For a nonsuperconducting resonator, the Johnson-noise-limited minimum detectable displacement (Δdmin) at room temperature, with bandwidth B, is about 10−7 A(ring) (B/Hz)1/2, if the rf electrical field level is only limited by vacuum breakdown. An application of the apparatus in studying the temperature-dependent changes in the Young's modulus of single crystals of TaS3 is shown.

Notizen: Combinatorial libraries of parallel-plate capacitors, consisting of Pt and La0.5Sr0.5CoO3 electrodes and a doped BaxSr1−xTiO3 dielectric layer, have been fabricated and analyzed to systematically study the effects of dopants on device performance. Epitaxial heterostructure libraries with sharp interfaces were generated from amorphous layers on LaAlO3 substrates. Two hundred and forty different host/dopant combinations were synthesized on a 1/2 in. by 1/2 in. substrate, with 23 capacitors for each combination. Addition of 1.5 mol % W was found to increase the figure of merit (ε/Ileak) 220-fold and reduce the high-frequency (MHz and GHz) loss tangent by fourfold. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A recently developed scanning tip microwave near-field microscope has been improved to achieve a spatial resolution of 100 nm (∼λ/106). Furthermore, explicit calculations of the field distribution using a simplified model allow quantitative microscopy of dielectric properties for dielectric materials. A detection sensitivity of δcursive-epsilon/cursive-epsilon∼6×10−4 has been achieved. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A combination of thin-film deposition and physical masking steps were used to generate libraries of the rare earth activated refractory metal oxides, Gd(La,Sr)AlOx. Systematic variation of composition and processing conditions afforded tricolor phosphors with the following nominal compositions, (Gd0.46Sr0.31)Al1.23OxF1.38:Eu0.062+ (green), La0.5Al1.5Ox:Eu0.042+ (blue), and Gd0.77Al1.23Ox:Eu0.063+ (red), which had quantum efficiencies of ≥94%, (similar, equals)60%, and ≥93%, respectively at λmaxex. The high quenching temperatures (250–350 °C), good chromaticities and refractory nature of these phosphors are desirable features for display applications. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We have explored the low temperature capability of a scanning-tip microwave near-field microscope to study superconductors. The shift in the quality factor of the microscope resonator can be used to obtain the temperature dependence of the surface resistance of a local region under the tip. Patterned YBa2Cu3O7−x films were scanned at various temperatures and surface resistance mapping was performed with high spatial resolution at 1.2 GHz. Superconducting transitions at different positions on a film can be detected. Edge-region defects in wet-etched patterns were observed and were shown to be nonsuperconducting at microwave frequencies at 80 K. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
