Notes: A Mössbauer study of Nd2Fe14−xGaxB and Nd2Fe11.5−xCo2.5GaxB confirmed that, in Nd2Fe14−xGaxB with x〈1, preferential occupation of the k2 site by Ga atoms occurs, and that when x≥1, Ga atoms preferentially occupy the k1 as well as j1 sites in addition to the k2 sites. In Nd2Fe11.5−xCo2.5GaxB, the Ga atoms preferentially occupy the j2 site, and also appear at the j1 sites when x≥1. Based on these findings, the different effect of Ga on the Curie temperature in these two compound series can be interpreted satisfactorily. The fact that in these compound series the a axis is little changed whereas the c axis remarkably increases with increasing Ga substitution can also be explained.

Notes: Heusler alloy Ni2MnGa thin films have been grown pseudomorphically on a relaxed NiGa interlayer on GaAs(001) by molecular-beam epitaxy. In situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction patterns, ex situ x-ray diffraction, and cross-sectional view transmission electron microscopy electron diffraction patterns confirm the single-crystal growth of Ni2MnGa. The films grow pseudomorphically on the relaxed NiGa interlayer with a tetragonal structure (a=b=5.79 Å and c=6.07 Å). Magnetic measurements using vibrating sample and superconducting quantum interference device magnetometers reveal Ni2MnGa to have an in-plane easy axis and a Curie temperature ∼350 K. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The ferromagnetic Heusler alloy Ni2MnIn has been grown on InAs (001) by molecular-beam epitaxy. In situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction, ex situ x-ray diffraction, Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, and transmission electron microscopy indicate the high-quality epitaxial growth of Ni2MnIn with the B2 crystal structure on InAs (001). Superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry shows that the Ni2MnIn film is ferromagnetic with a Curie temperature ∼170 K. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract A novel thermokinetic research method for determination of the rate constant of a reaction taking place in a batch conduction calorimeter under isothermal conditions is proposed: the double-thermoanalytical curve method. The method needs only the characteristic time parameter t m, the peak height Δm at time t m and the peak area a*m after time t m for two thermoanalytical curves measured with different initial concentrations of the reactants: it conveniently calculates the rate constants. The thermokinetics of four reaction systems were studied with this method, and its validity was verified by the experimental results.
