    Notes: In semi-insulating, Fe doped InP, we demonstrate that infrared absorption technique provides quantitative measurements of Fe concentrations. We show that the quantum efficiency is reduced more than 70% in Fe doped samples, in comparison to undoped samples. Relative near band edge photoluminescence (PL) intensity is antiproportional to Fe concentration. This can provide a calibration method to transform scanning PL images to quantitative Fe distributions. We demonstrate that infrared absorption mapping images Fe distribution in InP, in a similar way to EL2 imaging in GaAs. The images show that the slip-like defects decorated by Fe centers predominantly lie along [011] direction. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The magnetoresistance and the Hall-effect measurements in undoped n-InSe (InSe) and Er-doped InSe (InSe:Er) samples in the temperature range 10–340 K were carried out. The InSe sample and the InSe:Er sample exhibit a null transverse magnetoresistance effect for T(approximately-greater-than)160 and T(approximately-greater-than)140 K, respectively, and a zero longitudinal magnetoresistance effect for T(approximately-greater-than)160 and T(approximately-greater-than)100 K, respectively. As the temperature increases, the carrier concentration obtained from the Hall-effect measurements in the InSe sample increases up to 40 K, decreases in the range 40–100 K, and increases for T(approximately-greater-than)100 K, although the carrier concentration in the InSe:Er sample increases up to 300 K. In the same samples, the Hall mobility of the InSe sample increases up to 80 K and obeys to μH∝T−1.86 for T(approximately-greater-than)80 K, although the Hall mobility of the InSe:Er sample decreases up to 340 K and obeys to μH∝T−1.51 for T(approximately-greater-than)80 K. The electrical conductivity, which is proportional to a product of the Hall mobility and the carrier concentration, of the InSe sample and the InSe:Er sample decreases with increasing temperature for T(approximately-greater-than)60 and T(approximately-greater-than)100 K, respectively. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We show that two different types of photoquenching effect take place under low temperature illumination of lightly n-type bulk GaAs. Both phenomena result in an increase in positron trapping at vacancies. The first associated with a decrease in EL2 absorption, is produced with light of 1.1 μm wavelength and recovers near 100 K. While little photoquenching related to EL2 is observed after illumination close to the band edge (0.83 μm), persistent increases in Hall voltage and positron lifetime accompanied by a decrease in near band-edge absorption are observed. These latter phenomena recover at 50 K. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The magnetoresistance and Hall effect measurements were carried out in undoped p-GaSe and Gd doped p-GaSe (p-GaSe:Gd) samples in the temperature range 90–320 K and 60–320 K, respectively. The transverse and longitudinal magnetoresistance coefficients for p-GaSe and p-GaSe:Gd samples decrease with increasing temperatures and were found to be MJ⊥B and MJ(parallel)B∝T−2.37 (90≤T≤320 K) for p-GaSe and MJ⊥B and MJ(parallel)B∝T−2.09 (60≤T≤320 K) for p-GaSe:Gd. The carrier concentration obtained from the Hall effect measurements in the p-GaSe:Gd sample increases up to 100 K, decreases in the range 100–140 K, increases in the range 140–280 K, and decreases in the range 280–320 K, although the carrier concentration in the p-GaSe sample continuously increases up to 320 K. Impurity energy levels calculated from ln(p/T3/2) vs 103/T for p-GaSe in the range 100–140, 140–220, and 220–320 K are Ec−216 meV, Ev +322 meV, and Ev +573 meV, respectively, and for p-GaSe:Gd in the range 100–140, 140–260, and 280–320 K are Ec−224 meV, Ev+330 meV, and Ec −592 meV, respectively. In the same samples, the temperature dependence of the Hall mobilities of the p-GaSe and p-GaSe:Gd were found to be μH∝T−2.09 (180〈T〈320) and μH∝T−1.68 (180〈T〈320), respectively. The Hall mobilities for p-GaSe and p-GaSe:Gd are independent from the magnetic field at all sample temperatures. The electrical conductivities for both samples increase with increasing temperature and the electrical conductivity for p-GaSe is greater than that of p-GaSe:Gd for T〉120 K. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Background Psoriasis vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by well-demarcated erythema and scaly plaques. The pathogenesis of psoriasis still remains unclear. An increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and insufficient antioxidant activity have been determined in psoriatic lesions.Aim of the study To evaluate and compare superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GP) activity in erythrocytes, catalase (CAT) activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in serum of subjects with psoriasis and controls as well as MDA levels in skin biopsies from both groups.Study population Twenty-two psoriatic patients (12 women and ten men) and 22 (12 women and ten men) healthy controls were involved in this study.Findings Statistically significant decreased levels of erythrocyte SOD and GP activities were noted in psoriatic subjects. Furthermore, a statistically significant increased serum CAT activity was found in the psoriasis group. No statistically significant difference was found in the serum MDA levels in the two groups, however, statistically significant increased tissue levels of MDA were noted in the psoriasis group.Conclusions Our results support the hypothesis of an imbalance in the oxidant–antioxidant system in psoriasis.

    Notes: Background  The role of oxidative stress has not been fully understood in the aetiopathogenesis of vitiligo in different studies.Aim  We aimed to investigate the role of the oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of vitiligo.Methods  In this study, we examined levels of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, malondialdehyde and nitric oxide in tissue of 25 patients with generalized vitiligo and 25 healthy controls.Results  Our results revealed that levels of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and malondialdehyde in tissue were significantly increased in patients with generalized vitiligo (P 〈 0.05). However, there was no statistically significantly difference between two groups at tissue level of nitric oxide (P 〉 0.05).Conclusion  Our results demonstrate the presence of an imbalance in the oxidant–antioxidant system in vitiligo at tissue level and provide further support for a free radical-mediated damage as an initial pathogenic event in melanocyte degeneration in vitiligo.

    Notes: Biopolymers were prepared by cross-linking whey protein isolate (WPI) and soybean 11S using transglutaminase. Electrophoretic pattern, solubility, emulsification, hydrophobicity and foaming properties of the biopolymers were determined. SDS-PAGE showed bands corresponding to high-molecular-weight components (MW〉200 kDa). Biopolymer solubility was 〉 90% at pH 3 and below, and at pH 7 and above. Emulsifying properties of biopolymers were lower than those of WPI. The foaming capacity of the biopolymers (23.6 mL) and WPI/11S mixture (22.7 mL) were similar to that of egg albumin (20.3 mL). The foaming stability of the biopolymers (122 min) was higher than that of WPI/11S mixture (33.7 min), and was similar to that of egg albumin (132 min).

    Notes: Heterogeneity of biopolymers was determined by cross-linking acetylated-11S acidic subunits (Ac-11S) of soy protein with α-lactalbumin and β-lactoglobulin. The extent of polymerization was determined by electrophoresis and HPLC. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to determine thermal properties of starting proteins and biopolymers. HPLC data demonstrated the absence of biopolymers from Ac-11S, acetylated α-lactalbumin and acetylated β-lactoglobulin when each was incubated separately with transglutaminase (TG). However, Ac-11S formed biopolymers with α-lactalbumin and β-lactoglobulin when TG was added. TG catalyzed the formation of heterologous and homologous biopolymers from whey protein isolate (WPI) and soybean 11S globulin (11S). Cross-linking WPI and 11S provided biopolymers with improved heat stability which may be useful to provide functionality to food products.

    Notes: Transglutaminase (TG) was used to produce films from whey protein isolate, soybean 11S globulin and a mixture of the two (1:1, wt/wt). Solubility of TG cross-linked films was lower than that of control films at pH 3, 4, 6 and 8. Solubility of control films in 6.6M urea and in 10% SDS was higher than that of TG cross-linked films. Hydrolysis of control and TG cross-linked films by trypsin and α-chymotrypsin was similar after 24h incubation. Mean thickness of films ranged from 69 to 77 μm and there were no differences among thicknesses. Average tensile strength values of TG cross-linked films were two times greater than those of the homologous controls.

    Notes: Withholding feed has been suggested as a strategy to manage infectious disease of channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus (Rafinesque). In a previous study, we demonstrated that deprivation of feed for as little as 7 days reduced innate resistance of catfish to Flavobacterium columnare. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of feeding regimens [no feeding (NF), fed once every other day to satiation (FEOD) and fed once daily to satiation (FD)] on organosomatic indices, physiological changes and susceptibility of channel catfish to F. columnare. Fish that were not fed for 2 and 4 weeks had a significant increase (P 〈 0.05) in gutted weight:wet weight ratio and decrease in other organosomatic indices [gut index (GI), mesenteric fat index (MFI) and hepatosomatic index (HSI)]. Haematology was not effected by feeding regimen except at week 4, when a significantly higher haemoglobin level was observed in the NF fish. Serum protein did not differ at week 2, but the level at week 4 of the NF fish (35.91 mg mL−1) was significantly lower than that of the FD fish (41.77 mg mL−1). Significantly lower (P 〈 0.05) blood glucose (39.5 and 40.3 mg dL−1) and liver glycogen (1.7 and 1.8 mg g−1) were seen in the NF fish at weeks 2 and 4, respectively, as compared with blood glucose and liver glycogen levels of FD fish (67.5 and 92.8 mg dL−1 and 46.5 and 52.6 mg g−1 at weeks 2 and 4, respectively) and FEOD (82.8 and 85.5 mg dL−1 and 45.1 and 51.4 mg g−1 at weeks 2 and 4, respectively). Mortality in the NF fish caused by F. columnare (78%) was significantly higher (P 〈 0.05) than mortality in the FD and FEOD treatments (0.0 and 1.7%, respectively). Blood glucose and liver glycogen showed the same trend of low values for NF fish following challenge (week 6). Blood glucose, liver glycogen, GI and HSI are sensitive indicators for channel catfish deprived of feed (NF) for 4 weeks. Blood glucose and liver glycogen levels around 40 mg dL−1 and 2 mg g−1, respectively, are indicative of starvation in juvenile channel catfish. Moreover, NF fish were susceptible to F. columnare infection. Thus, it is suggested that in the absence of natural food, juvenile channel catfish should be fed at least once every other day to apparent satiation to maintain normal physiological function and improve resistance to F. columnare.
