Notes: Characteristics of an optically pumped titanium vapor laser have been investigated on the 3d2 4s(4P)4p 3D01−3d3(4F)4Rs 3F2 transition at 551.4 nm. An excimer laser of 14 mJ/pulse for vaporization and an N2 laser of 5 mJ/pulse for optical pumping are employed. The laser output energy is measured as a function of buffer gas pressure, delay time, output mirror reflectivity, pumping laser intensity, and vaporizing laser intensity. The possibility of lasing on the other transitions is also discussed.

Notes: Amplification by stimulated emission has been observed from an optically pumped nickel vapor on the transitions at 347 and 381 nm. Nickel vapor was produced by direct laser vaporization, and the nickel atoms were optically pumped by a N2 laser at 337 nm. The amplification factor at 347 nm reaches a maximum after the amplification factor at 381 nm reaches a maximum. The maximum amplification factors are 1.62 and 1.69, respectively.

Notes: The contribution of Gd and/or (Fe,Co) to the saturation magnetostriction constant λs of pseudobinary Gdx(Fe100−yCoy)100−x (9〈x〈65, y=100, 74,38, or 0) films has been examined by substituting nonmagnetic Y for Gd or nonmagnetic Cu for (Fe,Co) and comparing λs of these alloys at 300 and 80 K. The magnetostriction of Gdx(Fe,Co)100−x as well as Yx(Fe,Co)100−x films are positive and the composition (x) dependence of λs in Gd alloys is similar to Y alloys, but λs of Gd alloys are larger than Y alloys. It was further found that GdxCu100−x (35〈x〈60) shows positive λs at 80 K. These facts indicate positive contribution of Gd to λs in amorphous Gd-(Fe,Co) alloys.

Notes: Rare earth-transition metal (RE-TM) amorphous films have been used as magneto-optical recording media. One of the most important properties is the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, the main origin of which is explained by one ion anisotropy of rare earth ion. However, it is also noted that the anisotropy contribution due to the magnetostriction depends in a very similar manner on the RE species as in the case of the main anisotropy. Thus it was suggested that the main origin of the magnetostriction might be the one ion anisotropy of RE. The present work reports the saturation magnetostriction constant λs of various RE-Co amorphous alloy films with RE=Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er in the range of RE concentration of 0%–40%. In most cases, λs increases with RE concentration, then decreases after showing a peak and disappears altogether with ferromagnetism. For an RE species with a small one ion anisotropy, λs is small with a value of less than 2×10−5, and is found to be contributed primarily from Co. For RE with larger one ion anisotropy, namely for RE=Sm, Pr, Tb, and Dy, λs has values of the order of 10−4 and is estimated to be contributed mainly from RE one ion anisotropy.

Notes: The output characteristics of an optically pumped titanium vapor laser on various buffer gas species and pressures have been measured, and the role of buffer gas on the laser output is accordingly discussed. He, Ne, Ar, and Kr are used as buffer gases. The optimum condition for the maximum output energy is 4 Torr of He with 10 μs delay time.

Notes: Laser action has been observed on the titanium 625.8-nm line [(3d3(4F)4p3G04 −3d3(4F)4s 3F3 transition)]. A nitrogen laser is used to produce the titanium vapor by irradiating a metal plate, and the titanium atoms are optically pumped by a dye laser.

Notes: We examined whether oral administration of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Escherichia coli reactivated antigen-induced arthritis (AIA) in mice that is one of models of human rheumatoid arthritis. To induce AIA, mice were immunized by subcutaneous injection of ovalbumin (OVA) emulsified with complete Freund's adjuvant into the base of the tail (day 0) followed by intraarticular injection of OVA on day 21. To investigate the ability of LPS to reactivate AIA, varying doses of LPS were p.o. administered 48 h after the challenge injection. The results showed that administration of LPS was followed by reactivation of AIA in a dose-related fashion. The reactivation of AIA by LPS was associated with increases in interferon-γ, interleukin-1β and tumour necrosis factor-α. Polymyxin B sulfate given immediately before administration of LPS suppressed the reactivation of AIA. These findings suggest that LPS from intestinal bacteria may play a role in the reactivation of joint inflammation in which immune responses to pathogenic antigens are involved.

Notes: We studied the effect of rolipram, a phosphodiesterase (PDE) IV inhibitor, on allergic footpad swelling in mice. For this study, varying adjuvants including complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA), incomplete Freund's adjuvant (IFA) and Imject Alum (Alum) were used because the extent of antigen-specifically induced T helper type 1 (Th1) and Th2 responses had been shown to depend on adjuvants used. To induce allergic footpad swelling, we immunized mice with ovalbumin (OVA) emulsified in either CFA or IFA, dissolved in Alum or in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) as a control (day 0), followed by subcutaneous injection of the antigen into footpads on day 21. Rolipram was given orally to the animals daily from days 0–20. Results showed that treatment with rolipram was followed by an increase in early swelling at 0.5 h and a decrease in late swelling at 6 and 24 h in the CFA group. In the IFA group, rolipram significantly enhanced swelling at, but not after, 30 min. In the Alum and the PBS groups, the PDE inhibitor failed to affect the OVA-specific footpad reaction at all times examined. Treatment of the CFA and IFA groups with rolipram significantly inhibited the production of the Th1 antibody anti-OVA immunoglobulin G2a (IgG2a), and the drug enhanced Th2 cell-dependent anti-OVA IgE production. In both groups, rolipram also enhanced the secretion of Th2 cytokines including interleukin-4 (IL-4) and IL-10. These findings suggest that rolipram may facilitate early allergic footpad swelling mediated by Th2 immune responses, while the late phase of swelling associated with Th1 responses may be attenuated by the PDE IV inhibitor.

Notes: Background : There is a lack of evidence for the efficacy of preventive medications for peptic ulcers (PUs) among long-term users of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in Japan.Aim : To estimate the preventive effect by normal dose, not high-dose histamine-H2 receptor antagonists (H2RA) for NSAID-induced ulcers. Methods : We designed two different studies to assess the efficacy of anti-ulcer agents in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in patients treated over a long term with NSAIDs. An investigative survey divided patients into those not taking anti-ulcer agents (non-medication group); those taking mucosal protective agents (mucosal protectant group), H2RA (H2RA group), proton pump inhibitors (PPI group), or a prostaglandin E1 analog (PG) (PG group). The second study compared prospectively the preventive effects of either famotidine 20 mg bd (famotidine group) or lansoprazole 15 mg daily (lansoprazole group) in patients with PU scars. Results : The prevalence of PU in the H2RA group was significantly lower compared to the mucosal protectant group (P 〈 0.05), and the mucosal protectant group was not significantly different to the non-medication group. The prospective study revealed that the PU onset rate of the famotidine group was 8% (1/13), and lansoprazole group was 15% (2/13), indicating no significant differences between the two. Conclusions : In Japan, normal-dose H2RA is expected to be a new PU preventive treatment strategy in patients requiring long-term NSAID therapy.
