Notes: Abstract. Objective and Design: Dehydrocurdione, a sesquiterpene isolated from zedoary, was tested for in vivo and in vitro antiinflammatory actions.¶Materials: Analgesic effect was tested in ICR mice by the acetic acid-induced writhing method. Antipyretic effect was studied in Sprague-Dawley rats treated with baker's yeast. Antiinflammatory activities were tested in Wistar rats with carrageenan-induced paw edema and adjuvant-induced chronic arthritis. In vitro analyses included the capabilities to inhibit cyclooxygenase activity, and to scavenge free radicals as determined by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR).¶Results: Oral administration of dehydrocurdione (40 to 200 mg/kg) mitigated the writhing reflex induced by acetic acid and the fever elicited by baker's yeast. A higher dose (200 mg/kg) of dehydrocurdione was required to inhibit the carrageenan-induced paw edema. Oral administration of dehydrocurdione at 120 mg/kg/day for 12 days significantly reduced chronic adjuvant arthritis. Unlike indomethacin (IC50: 0.1 μM), dehydrocurdione showed minimal cyclooxygenase inhibition. However, dehydrocurdione (100 μM to 5 mM) significantly reduced free radical formation from hydrogen peroxide and ferrous iron determined by EPR spectrometry using 5,5′-dimethyl-l-pyrroline-N-oxide as a spin trap agent.¶Conclusion: In addition to the well-known effect of zedoary as a stomachic, dehydrocurdione, the major component of Curcuma zedoaria Roscoe has antiinflammatory potency related to its antioxidant effect.

Notes: Abstract. We consider the following partition problem: Given a set S of n elements that is organized as k sorted subsets of size n/k each and given a parameter h with 1/k ≤ h ≤ n/k , partition S into g = O(n/(hk)) subsets D 1 , D 2 , . . . , D g of size Θ(hk) each, such that, for any two indices i and j with 1 ≤ i 〈 j ≤ g , no element in D i is bigger than any element in D j . Note that with various combinations of the values of parameters h and k , several fundamental problems, such as merging, sorting, and finding an approximate median, can be formulated as or be reduced to this partition problem. The partition problem also finds many applications in solving problems of parallel computing and computational geometry. In this paper we present efficient parallel algorithms for solving the partition problem and a number of its applications. Our parallel partition algorithm runs in O( log n) time using $$ O\left(\frac{\min\{(n/h)*\max\{\log h,1\}, n*\max\{\log(1/h),1\}\}}{\log n}\right) $$ processors in the EREW PRAM model. The complexity bounds of our parallel partition algorithm on the respective special cases match those of the optimal EREW PRAM algorithms for merging, sorting, and finding an approximate median. Using our parallel partition algorithm, we are also able to obtain better complexity bounds (even possibly on a weaker parallel model) than the previously best known parallel algorithms for several important problems, including parallel multiselection, parallel multiranking, and parallel sorting of k sorted subsets.

Notes: Abstract In the ocypodid crab Ilyoplax pusilla (De Haan) observed in Shirahama, Japan between 1982 and 1989, three types of territorial behavior effective in repelling neighbors are reported here in addition to barricade-building and neighbor burrow-plugging previously reported by Wada (1984, 1987). These territorial behaviors were performed by crabs larger than ca. 3.5 mm in carapace width (CW). Juvenile crabs (〈 ca. 3.5 mm CW) did not defend the area around their burrows, and some of them cohabited with larger crabs in the same burrows. Among crabs larger than ca. 3.5 mm CW, the territorial behavior was more diverse and prevalent in males than in females, especially larger males (〉 ca. 5 mm CW). Larger crabs of either sex had larger home ranges and territories. The size of the home range did not differ between males and females, but the size of territory was larger in males than in females. Thus, territorial behavior develops highly in larger males having a larger territory.

Notes: Abstract The ocypodid crab Ilyoplax pingi, observed in Kanghwa I., Korea in 1992, builds a mound at the burrow entrance, by piling mud dug out from the burrow. The mounds were made by both waving and non-waving males, and by both ovigerous and non-ovigerous females. The burrow diameter at the widest part tended to be larger in crabs with mounds than in crabs without mounds, whereas the burrow depth was not different between them. The mound density increased in the late exposure period, when the crabs' surface activities declined. Mound removal and rebuilding experiments revealed that the presence of the mounds has the effect of keeping neighboring crabs away.

Notes: Abstract  For three spider crabs (Tiarinia cornigera, Micippaplatipes and Pugettia quadridens quadridens), patterns of algal utilization for decorating were compared with the dynamics of algae on an intertidal rocky shore reef where the crabs co-occurred. T. cornigera and P. quadridens quadridens were most abundant from autumn to spring when the dominant algae (Boodleacoacta, Sargassum hemiphyllum, S. thunbergii and Corallina pilulifera) occurred in high coverage, while M. platipes was most abundant from spring to autumn. Monthly change of algae used for decorating was not correlated with algae growing in the crab habitat for T. cornigera, but for M. platipes, it was positively correlated for two algal species, and for P. quadridens quadridens, negatively correlated for one algal species. Each species of the spider crabs used some algal species preferentially for decoration. Decorating preference experiments conducted in the laboratory showed that M. platipes and P. quadridens quadridens exhibited similar preference to their algal utilization in the field, whereas for T. cornigera, algal preference in the experiment differed from utilization in the field. Comparisons between materials used for decoration and gut contents revealed that T. cornigera and M. platipes used algal species differently for decorating and feeding, while P. quadridens quadridens used the same algal species for both decorating and feeding. Different tactics for camouflage are discussed in terms of algal utilizations by the three majid species.

Notes: Abstract The burrow living ocypodid crab Ilyoplax pusillus (De Haan, 1835) sometimes plugs the burrow of neighbors situated from 1.0 to 8.3 cm away with surface mud, while the neighbor, termed the pluggee, is in the burrow. Most pluggers were large males, whereas pluggees were smaller than pluggers and had a sex ratio close to 1:1. After being plugged, most pluggees usually reemerged on the surface within 5 min, but occasionally took up to 77 min to do so. The plugger always foraged or performed waving displays around the burrow of the pluggee while the pluggee stayed inside the burrow. Although the activity site of the pluggee was originally directed toward the burrow of the plugger or the adjacent area, after reemergence its activity site was oriented toward another direction. From these observations, it is suggested that neighbor burrow-plugging is a behavior adopted mainly by large males as a means of maintaining the area of their surface activities against smaller neighbors. My observations were made from June 1984 to June 1985 at Fukuro River Estuary, central Japan.

Notes: Summary When 50 mg CS-518, a novel thromboxane (TX) A2 synthase inhibitor, was orally administered to healthy male volunteers, the plasma concentration of CS-518 peaked after 0.5 h and then decreased with a half-life of 0.44 h. There was no significant change in the plasma concentration of circulating TXB2, whereas that of circulating 11-dehydrothromboxane B2 (11-dhTXB2), an enzymatic metabolite of TXB2, was significantly decreased from 0.5 h to 24 h after administration; the maximal decrease to about 25% of the pre-dose value was found at 6 h. After CS-518 100 mg b.d. for 4.5 days, plasma 11-dhTXB2 was suppressed to the same extent as after the single dose of 50 mg from 6 h after the initial dose throughout the administration period. The urinary excretion of 11-dhTXB2 corrected for the creatinine level was significantly decreased by 70–84% throughout the treatment. These results suggest that CS-518 causes long-lasting inhibition of TXA2 synthase despite its rapid elimination from plasma, and that circulating 11-dhTXB2 in plasma and its urinary excretion can serve as a quantitative index of TXA2 synthase inhibition in vivo by CS-518.
