Notizen: Plasma-opening switches have been used to improve pulsed-power wave shapes for over a decade. These switches have used the inertia of the plasma to hold the switch closed. This results in conflicting requirements when long hold-off time and fast opening are required, and also results in variation in opening current due to variation in initial plasma fill. The current-toggled plasma-opening switch attempts to overcome these problems by using external magnetic fields rather than inertia to control the plasma conductor. Data will be presented showing several features of the operation of this switch. These data will be compared to models used to design the switch. The comparisons indicate that the mass can be measured approximately from fast coil data and that the slow coil flux does set the opening level of the current. They also indicate that the opening current is somewhat dependent upon plasma mass, and that the design of the field coils that provide the control fields must be done more carefully to provide a switch that opens satisfactorily.

Notizen: We have developed two voltage diagnostics that circumvent many of the difficulties of measuring voltage in magnetically insulated transmission lines driven by terawatt (megavolt and megampere) electrical pulsers. Two versions of simple vacuum capacitive probes use strong magnetic fields to deflect electrons from the anode-mounted displacement current collector. We then introduce the electron launching voltage monitor as a novel way to measure voltage. This device uses a relationship between anode electric field and electron current launched from a cathode-mounted perturbation. The electron launching voltage monitor has a large number of advantages over methods commonly used to measure voltage, including large signal level, tolerance to poor vacuum, and nanosecond temporal response. This article shows designs for all these monitors, and presents data from experiments done on the SuperMite pulser at Sandia National Laboratories.

Notizen: Here Z, a 60 TW/5 MJ electrical accelerator located at Sandia National Laboratories, has been used to implode tungsten wire-array Z pinches. These arrays consisted of large numbers of tungsten wires (120–300) with wire diameters of 7.5 to 15 μm placed in a symmetric cylindrical array. The experiments used array diameters ranging from 1.75 to 4 cm and lengths from 1 to 2 cm. A 2 cm long, 4 cm diam tungsten array consisting of 240, 7.5 μm diam wires (4.1 mg mass) achieved an x-ray power of ∼200 TW and an x-ray energy of nearly 2 MJ. Spectral data suggest an optically thick, Planckian-like radiator below 1000 eV. One surprising experimental result was the observation that the total radiated x-ray energies and x-ray powers were nearly independent of pinch length. These data are compared with two-dimensional radiation magnetohydrodynamic code calculations. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The Saturn pulsed power accelerator [R. B. Spielman et al., in Proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Dense Z-pinches, Laguna Beach, CA, 1989, edited by N. R. Pereira, J. Davis, and N. Rostoker (American Institute of Physics, New York, 1989), p. 3] at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and the Nova laser [J. T. Hunt and D. R. Speck, Opt. Eng. 28, 461 (1989)] at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) have been used to explore techniques for studying the behavior of ablator material in x-ray radiation environments comparable in magnitude, spectrum, and duration to those that would be experienced in National Ignition Facility (NIF) hohlraums [J. D. Lindl, Phys. Plasmas 2, 3933 (1995)]. The large x-ray outputs available from the Saturn pulsed-power-driven z pinch have enabled us to drive hohlraums of full NIF ignition scale size at radiation temperatures and time scales comparable to those required for the low-power foot pulse of an ignition capsule. The high-intensity drives available in the Nova laser have allowed us to study capsule ablator physics in smaller-scale hohlraums at radiation temperatures and time scales relevant to the peak power pulse for an ignition capsule. Taken together, these experiments have pointed the way to possible techniques for testing radiation-hydrodynamics code predictions of radiation flow, opacity, equation of state, and ablator shock velocity over the range of radiation environments that will be encountered in a NIF hohlraum. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Diode experiments on the PBFA-I pulser using a magnetically insulated ion diode are described. The insulating magnetic field is supplied by self-field due to the ion current plus the field generated by a series field coil. In the experiments described here, the diode operated at the 10-TW, 2.5-MV level with over 300 kJ going to the diode on many shots. The operation of the diode, the dielectric anode, and the proton beam focusing are described.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: On the Inhibition of the Corrosion of Buried IronThere is a report on some laboratory experiments on the inhibition of the corrosion of buried iron. The results are explained by means of the influences of the physical properties of the soil upon the suppression of the iron corrosion by the inhibitors Na2CrO4, NaNO2 and sodium benzoate. The results allow to recommend the application of inhibitors for uncovered ironpipes.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: The Coefficient of Temperature and the Heat of Activation of the Corrosion-Reaction of Iron in SoilThe corrosion of soft iron in different soils can be described in dependance of the soil water to soil air ratio by means of the coefficients of temperature and the heats of activation of these corrosion reactions of the iron. The mean coeffizient of temperature in soils containing 20 per cent of water was about 1,92 and in water saturated soils it was about 1.7. The heats of activation of the corrosion of iron in water saturated soils (clay, loan, river sand, infusoria) amount to 9-10 kcal, in those containing 20 per cent of water 12-18 kcal.
