Notizen: Plasma-opening switches have been used to improve pulsed-power wave shapes for over a decade. These switches have used the inertia of the plasma to hold the switch closed. This results in conflicting requirements when long hold-off time and fast opening are required, and also results in variation in opening current due to variation in initial plasma fill. The current-toggled plasma-opening switch attempts to overcome these problems by using external magnetic fields rather than inertia to control the plasma conductor. Data will be presented showing several features of the operation of this switch. These data will be compared to models used to design the switch. The comparisons indicate that the mass can be measured approximately from fast coil data and that the slow coil flux does set the opening level of the current. They also indicate that the opening current is somewhat dependent upon plasma mass, and that the design of the field coils that provide the control fields must be done more carefully to provide a switch that opens satisfactorily.

Notizen: The three-dimensional particle-in-cell code quicksilver [Seidel et al., Computational Physics, edited by A. Tenner (World Scientific, Singapore, 1991), p. 475] has been used to study applied-B ion diodes. The impedance behavior of the diode in these simulations is in good agreement with both analytic theory and experiments at peak power. The simulations also demonstrate the existence of electromagnetic instabilities which induce divergence in the ion beam. Early in time, there is an instability at high frequency relative to the ion transit time τi, and the resulting beam divergence is low. However, later in time, the system makes a transition to an instability with a frequency close to 1/τi, and the ion beam divergence rises to an unacceptably high value. The transition is associated with the build-up of electron space charge in the diode, and the resulting increase in the beam current density enhancement (J/JCL). Using different schemes to inhibit the electron evolution, the transition has both been postponed and permanently eliminated, resulting in Li+1 ion beams with a sustained divergence of ∼10 mrad at an energy of ∼10 MeV.

Notizen: A new, large-area, high-uniformity, flash x-ray source that efficiently couples electrical energy to photon energy has been successfully constructed and tested on the 1-MV, 2-MA electron accelerator SPEED (short pulse experimental electron device). The source employs 18 individual blade diodes arranged in the configuration of a frustum. Each blade was magnetically isolated on the real-cathode side of an anode foil, but not on the virtual-cathode side. The operation of the diode was heavily diagnosed using 24 Rogowski coils, a vacuum voltage monitor, p-i-n diode detectors, an 80-element TLD array, and a fast-framing x-ray pinhole camera. The individual blade diodes were found to exhibit line pinching, end-to-end pinching, and minimal electron reflexing through the Ta anode foil, with a radiation yield that agreed with Monte Carlo simulations. The end-to-end pinch location could be controlled by tapering the anode–cathode gap. The impedance depended on only the smallest spacing, and was independent of pinch location.

Notizen: Diode experiments on the PBFA-I pulser using a magnetically insulated ion diode are described. The insulating magnetic field is supplied by self-field due to the ion current plus the field generated by a series field coil. In the experiments described here, the diode operated at the 10-TW, 2.5-MV level with over 300 kJ going to the diode on many shots. The operation of the diode, the dielectric anode, and the proton beam focusing are described.

Notizen: Recently, experiments have shown that relativistic electrons in a pinch diode, which strike the anode near the axis, have an angular distribution that is almost entirely within 30° of the normal. Analysis of numerical simulation results provides an explanation of the observed angular distribution. The small angles result from the fact that the electrons are strongly decelerated by a large potential gradient that exists just below the anode center. The resulting population of cool electrons can then be swept up by the axial electric field and redirected to the anode with small angles of incidence.

Notizen: An improved understanding of the factors that control the axial focus of applied-B ion diodes was obtained from time-resolved diagnostics of ion-beam trajectories. This resulted in a new selection of anode shape that produced a proton focus of 1.3-mm diameter from a 4.5-cm-radius diode, which is a factor of 2 improvement over previous results. We have achieved a peak proton power density of 1.5±0.2 TW/cm2 on the 1-TW Proto I accelerator. The radial convergence of this proton beam, defined as the ratio of the anode diameter to focused beam FWHM, is 70. Time-resolved information about virtual cathode evolution, the self- and applied-magnetic-field bending, and the horizontal focus of the beam was also obtained. In addition, the diffusion of the magnetic field into the anode plasma is estimated by measuring the horizontal focal position as a function of time. Finally, we discuss the effects of gas cell scattering on the beam focus.

Notizen: Two magnetically insulated ion diodes that utilize a radial applied-B field are described. Both diodes generate an annular beam that is extracted along the diode axis. The first diode operated at 1.2 MV and 600 kA for 25 ns and generated a 300-kA ion beam. The second operated at 300 kV, 100 kA and generated 15 kA of ion current. The first diode was used to study diode performance as a function of inner and outer anode-cathode gaps, the applied-B field, and transmission line current ratios. The second diode was used to study anode plasma formation. The diodes were operated below Bcrit, resulting in electron leakage to the anode, especially near the outer cathode. A definition of Bcrit applicable to extraction diodes is given and methods of improving ion production efficiency in these diodes are suggested. The strong correlation of ion production with visible light emission suggests, however, that the electron loss played an important role in anode turn-on. The breakdown of neutral gas desorbed by electron impact is thought to be the anode plasma production mechanism. The grazing incidence leakage electrons affect the breakdown by significantly enhancing space-charge-induced electric fields in the dielectric-filled anode grooves.

Notizen: Abstract An analysis of the transmission of a transient electromagnetic plane wave through a grating formed by an infinite array of circular cylinders is presented. Emphasis is placed on the transient shielding characteristics of the grating for various cylinder spacings and angles of incidence. The transient results are obtained by first obtaining analytical experssions for the fields in the frequency domain and then performing a numerical inverse Fourier transformation. Some physical interpretations of the shielding effectiveness of the grating are given.
