Notes: Summary A case of bilateral anomalous arterial supply of the lower limb is presented. In this case, both anterior tibial arteries were hypoplastic. These arteries came to the anterior (extensor) compartment by passing superiorly through the interosseous membrane. They ran between the tibialis anterior and the extensor hallucis longus muscles and terminated after giving numerous muscular and fascial branches. The dorsalis pedis arteries originated from the peroneal arteries. The peroneal arteries reached the anterior compartment by piercing the interosseous membrane at its lower part and ran as the dorsalis pedis arteries. Awareness of the anatomical variations in anatomy of the distal popliteal artery is important for angiographers, vascular surgeons and reconstructive surgeons who operate upon these regions.

Notes: Background: Biopsy and electrical activity recordings of the corpus cavernosum are 2 new diagnostic methods for the evaluation of impotent men. We evaluated the corpus cavernosum ultrastructure and electromyography (EMG) recordings from patients with erectile dysfunction. Methods: Twenty erectile dysfunction patients with veno-occlusive dysfunction underwent a detailed history, physical examination, biochemical tests, hormonal analysis, injection of an intracavernous vasoactive agent (60 mg papaverine-HCI), color penile Doppler ultrasonography, cavernosometry/ cavernosography and corpus cavernosum electromyography (CC-EMG). Thirteen patients underwent total vein ligation and 7 had penile prosthesis implantations. Tissue samples were obtained during surgery from both corpora cavernosa and examined by transmission electron microscopy. Control corporal tissue samples were taken from 3 cadavers. Results: In 15 patients, CC-EMG recordings were 15.6 ± 0.65 μV in the flaccid state, which decreased in 13 patients after papaverine (5.61 ± 0.25 μV; P 〈 0.001). Five patients with diabetes mellitus had low amplitudes in the flaccid state (5.26 ± 0.45 μV), which did not vary significantly after a papaverine injection (4.99 |pL 0.75 μV). The pathology of the corpus cavernosum biopsy specimens revealed a smooth muscle cell thickened basal membrane, dilated rough endoplasmic reticulum, and increased numbers of fibroblasts, but ultrastructurally normal endothelial cells lining the and sinusoids. There was no difference between samples from diabetic or nondiabetic patients, or from either side of the corpora cavernosa. The only pathologic change observed in the controls was mitochondrial swelling. Conclusion: CC-EMG is less invasive and a valuable method in patients with erectile dysfunction, whereas no specific findings were observed from penile biopsy specimens.

Notes: In this study, the myelinated axons of the rostrum, genu, truncus and splenium parts of the corpus callosum and of the anterior, posterior and habenular commissures were counted in the rat brain by using a camera lucida. The numerical densities of these axons were compared with each other by means of quantitative analytical statistical methods. In parts of the corpus callosum, a statistically significant difference was found between the rostrum and genu, rostrum and truncus, rostrum and the splenium, genu and truncus, and the genu and splenium. However, no statistically significant difference was found between the truncus and splenium. When comparing the number of myelinated axons of the anterior, posterior and habenular commissures, statistically significant differences were found between the anterior and posterior commissures, and between the anterior and habenular commissures. No statistically significant difference was found between the posterior and habenular commissures. Small sized myelinated axons were present in all parts of the corpus callosum and in the anterior commissure. However, a heterogeneous distribution of myelinated axons was present in the posterior and habenular commissures.

Notes: Abstract  The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the histological effects of amniotic fluid on bone healing in the rabbit fetus. Fetal femurs (n=34) were fractured in the diaphysis and two experimental groups were established. In group A fetuses (n=18), the fracture ends were bathed in amniotic fluid through their unsutured skin wounds. In group B fetuses (n=16), the fracture sites were isolated from amniotic fluid by suturing the wound edges. Nonoperated fetuses were used as control group (n=9). The fetuses were sacrificed on the first, third and seventh postoperative days for histological studies. Histological examination of the specimens was performed to detect inflammation, fibroblastic proliferation, bone cellularity, callus and cartilage formation. The results were compared, using the Fisher exact chi square test criteria, where no statistically significant differences were detected between group A and group B ( P〉0.05).

Notes: Summary A rare variation of the axillary artery is presented. On routine anatomical dissection in one male cadaver the thoracodorsal artery was found to originate from the acromiothoracic artery independently from the circumflex scapular artery. Numerous flaps based on the branches of the axillary artery have been described. As a result of this case, and a review of the literature to gain further knowledge of anatomical variations, it is advised that preoperative angiography is indicated prior to utilizing flaps from this area.

Notes: We describe a rare anomaly in the submental region of a single male cadaver specimen. The anterior belly of the right digastric muscle was observed to have three separate insertions. Most medial of these crossed the midline and inserted to the digastric fossa with the opposite digastric muscle. These muscle bands were united in a common tendon as they continued with the posterior belly. This is an anatomical variation in the mylohyoid digastric muscle group in the floor of the mouth. Consideration of such variations of the anterior bellies of the digastric muscles should be noted during the evaluation of the floor of the mouth in the CT examination or MR imaging. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
