    Degradation Kinetics of Anthocyanins from Sour Cherry, Pomegranate, and Strawberry Juices by Hydrogen Peroxide (2002)

    Notes: : Degradations were studied at different hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentrations (9.31 to 27.92 mmol. L1) over a range of 10° to 30 °C. Degradation of anthocyanins by H2O2 was described by first-order function. Comparison of t1/2 values revealed that sour cherry anthocyanins were the most resistant to H2O2, followed by pomegranate and strawberry anthocyanins. Thus, the removal of residual H2O2 from the juice contact surfaces of aseptically packaged strawberry juices should be controlled more carefully to prevent anthocyanin degradation. Respective Ea values were between 9.4 to 11.1, 9.5 to 11.4, and 11.4 to 12.2 kcal.mol1; and Q10 values between 1.59 to 2.22, 1.62 to 2.05, and 1.76 to 2.36 for strawberry, sour cherry, and pomegranate anthocyanins.

    Notes: Abstract Although the patellar (infrapatellar) branch of the saphenous nerve is vulnerable to direct trauma, traumatic prepatellar neuroma has rarely been reported in the literature. It should be considered in the differential diagnosis of disorders causing anterior knee pain. Point tenderness, a palpable fusiform nodule and a positive Tinel's sign are the diagnostic features. Simple excision is curative.

    Notes: Summary Pericardial and lung involvement in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), suspected to be less severe in a developing nation (Turkey), have been evaluated. We have studied clinical, echocardiographic and pulmonary findings (radiological and functional) in 93 consecutive Turkish patients with definite/classical RA. Findings were compared with those of a group of patients with osteoarthritis or local rheumatological conditions (n=60) in a blind protocol. Fifty patients with systemic lupus (SLE) were studied as a high risk control group for pericardial involvement. While pericardial disease was detected in 5.5% (5/90) of RA patients, it was detected in 6.6% (4/60) of the control patients. SLE patients had a 26% (13/50) prevalence. Interstitial lung disease was found in 27.7% of RA patients but it was present in 6.6% (4/60) of the control patients. We observed that a group of patients with RA in Turkey had a low prevalence of pericardial disease. This is further evidence that RA has a mild course in developing countries.

    A comparison of the near-ultraviolet continuum and chromospheric emission line fluxes of the late-type giant stars (1990)

    Notes: Abstract We investigate the near-ultraviolet high-resolution LWR spectra of the stars α Cas, β And, α Tau, β Gem, γ Cru, α Boo, and β Peg, obtained with the aid of the International Ultraviolet Explorer Satellite. We have given here a list of the strongest and most prevalent emission lines in the near-ultraviolet spectra of α Boo, KlIIIp, and β Peg, M2.5II-III which have the same luminosity class and different spectral type. The near-ultraviolet continuum flux measurements and integrated emission line fluxes of these stars for the 2500–3200 Å region are presented in order to compare the variations in the appearance of the near-ultraviolet flux distribution with the temperature structure of their chromospheres for K and M giant stars. We also discuss differences between observed and calculated fluxes found from the Planck function.

    Notes: Abstract Thin films of copper indium diselenide (CuInSe2) were prepared by selenization of CuInSe2-Cu-In multilayered structure on glass substrate. The selenization procedure was carried out in a vapour of elemental selenium in a vacuum chamber. The obtained films were characterised by XRD and SEM measurements. The effects of substrate temperature on the structural, electrical and optical properties were studied. It was found that single phase CuInSe2 thin films with significant adhesion to substrate can be produced by selenization of CuInSe2-Cu-In multilayered structure at 450°C, when the first non single phase CuInSe2 layer was deposited at substrate temperature of 400°C. The thin films were found to be direct band gap semiconductors with a band gap of 0.97 eV.
