    Notizen: Summary A cationic adduct of a partly blocked hexamethylene isocyanurate and N-methyldiethanolamine was prepared and applied as a crosslinker in one-pack water-borne polyurethane system. The deblocking and crosslinking reactions were followed by FTIR, TGA and DSC techniques. Deblocking started at about 100°C, while at higher temperatures urethane, allophanate, and urea linkages were formed. The efficiency of the cationic crosslinker was evaluated by determining the insoluble part of the crosslinked polyurethane ionomer films. Films of a good solvent resistance were obtained using 15 wt% of the cationic crosslinker and 0.05 wt% of a catalyst at 130°C.

    Notizen: Summary In acid medium and at temperatures from 50 to 100°C the resins from three different guanamines and three different unsaturated aldehydes were synthesized. The products were red coloured resins, which were soluble in organic solvents and were able to cure with hexamethylenetetramine to form hard and almost insoluble products. Using a combination of NMR and GPC methods it was possible to predict the course and the mechanism of the reactions. The rates of the reactions depend on the reaction conditions and on the type of the monomer.

    Notizen: A series of side chain liquid crystal polyurethanes (CnCNPs), in which the spacer length was varied from 2 to 12 methylene units, were synthesized by the addition polymerization of α-[bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amino]-ω-(4-cyanoazobenzene-4′-oxy)alkanes (CnCN-diols) with hexamethylene diisocyanate. The liquid crystalline properties of CnCNPs were characterized by means of differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Polyurethanes with spacer length 4 or higher exhibited mesomophic properties. C4CNP and C5CNP exhibited an enantiotropic nematic mesophase, while C6-C12CNPs exhibited enantiotropic bilayer smectic mesophases. CnCNPs have a high tendency to crystallize; crystallization is kinetically controlled. Polyurethane's backbone crystallization is closely related to hydrogen bonding. To establish the role of hydrogen bonding in mesophase formation as well as crystallization, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy studies of CnCNPs were carried out at different temperatures focusing on H-bonds between the N—H and C=O groups of the urethane backbone. With increasing temperature, C=O and N—H stretching bands were evenly shifted to higher wavenumbers, with two exceptions (C4CNP and C5CNP) discussed in detail in the text. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notizen: An adduct of hexamethylene isocyanurate and isopropylidene malonate was prepared and tested as a crosslinker in a one-pack water-borne polyurethane system. It was characterized by FTIR, NMR, and SEC; the blocking and curing courses were followed by FTIR and DSC. The crosslinker was a mixture of various oligomers having mainly amide-type linkages. The cure analysis showed that cleavage of the malonate ring started at around 110°C and was followed by the formation of ester-type products. After 30 min of heating at 130°C the insoluble part of crosslinked polyurethane films exceeded 80%. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: Summary Liquid crystalline diols containing a biphenyl mesogenic core, methoxy or cyano terminal groups and spacers of various lengths were synthesized and used for the preparation of side-chain thermotropic polyurethanes. The structure of the synthesized diols and polymers was confirmed by elemental analysis, FTIR and NMR spectroscopy. Phase transition temperatures were studied by DSC, while optical textures were characterized by polarizing microscopy. A smectic type arrangement was found for the mesophases of all products.

    Notizen: Summary A series of side-chain liquid crystalline polyurethanes was prepared by reacting a COOH functionalized polyurethane with monomers based on a biphenyl core with a methoxy terminal group and spacers of different lengths (α-bromo-ω-(4'-methoxybiphenyl-4-oxy)alkanes) in the presence of triethylamine. FTIR and NMR spectroscopic analysis of the products revealed that the monomers were attached to the polymer backbone as side chains by covalent, ester bonds. Thermotropic liquid crystalline behaviour of the ester type derivatives was analysed by differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing optical microscopy. All products exhibited smectic mesophases of highly ordered focal-conic structures.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Die Reaktionen zwischen Harnstoff und Formaldehyd wurden im sauren und im neutralen Medium im Temperaturebereich von 290 bis 390 K mit 13C-NMR-Spektroskopie und Differential-Scanning-Calorimetrie (DSC) studiert. Bei höherem pH wurde eine Spaltung des DSC-Kurvenpeaks beobachtet. Der eine Peak gehört zu der Addition des Formaldehyds an Harnstoff, der zweite zu der Kondensation der Additionsprodukte. Für beide Reaktionen wurden die Aktivierungsenergie, die Polymerisationswärme, die Reaktionsordnung und die Temperaturmaxima der Reaktionen bestimmt. Es wurde bestätigt, daß die DSC für das Studium komplexer Polykondensationsreaktionen gut geeingnet ist.
    Notizen: The reactions of urea with formaldehyde were studied by means of 13C NMR spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) in acid and neutral medium, the temperature range being between 290 and 390 K. At higher pH the peak of the DSC curve splits into two peaks one of which belongs to the addition of formaldehyde to urea and the second to the subsequent condensation of the latter. For both reactions, the activation energy, heat of polymerization, reaction order and temperature maximum have been determined. The usefulness of DSC to study the kinetics of more complex polycondensation reactions was established.
