Notes: Abstract We have investigated the production of heat-labile enterotoxin (LT), Verotoxin (VT), cytotoxic necrotizing factor (CNF), haemolysis (Hly) and lethal activity for mice in 48 Escherichia coli strains isolated from patients with urinary tract infections. Mannose-resistant and mannose-sensitive haemagglutination in these strains were also studied. Among the total strains investigated, 50% were haemolytic, 50% synthesized CNF and 58% were lethal for mice. A total of 33 (69%) strains were toxigenic, showing positive results at least in one of the tests employed for toxin detection. No strain was positive for LT and VT production. We conclude that, in addition to haemolytic and haemagglutinating activities, the production of CNF was closely associated to virulence in E. coli strains isolated from urinary tract infections.

Notes: The phagocytic activities of N. lovaniensis (Aq/9/1/45D) and N. gruberi (1518/1f and 1518/1e) were studied in the presence of erythrocytes of various species: chicken, rabbit, goat, and human (A+, B+, and AB+ were tested). The percentage of amoebae with ingested red cells, the phagocytic index (PhI), can be considered as an expression of phagocytic activity. Under given conditions (erythrocyte concentration, incubation time, age of amoebic cultures) each strain of Naegleria prefers one erythrocyte type. Thus, for 72-h cultures, N. lovaniensis ingested more A+ type erythrocytes than did N. gruberi strains but had very low affinity for rabbit red cells except when very high concentrations were tested. Naegleria gruberi 1f was the most active of the three strains towards rabbit and B+ and AB+ human erythrocytes, but very low PhIs were obtained with goat erythrocytes. Naegleria gruberi le exhibited high phagocytic activity for every erythrocyte type except for rabbit red cells.

Notes: SYNOPSIS By using the split-pair method autogamy was induced in Stylonychia mytilus Ehrenberg and S. muscorum Kahl, and the process was thoroly studied in the former. The pairs split early in conjugation continued the process as autogamonts and never united again altho they were placed in the same depression slide. The pattern of nuclear behavior during autogamy closely resembles that reported for conjugation. The fusion of pronuclei at metaphase is usually observed, but it occasionally fails and the stationary pronucleus appears to continue its development as a hemicaryon. The macronuclear anlage and the definitive micronuclei differentiate from particular products of the 3rd postgamic division.

Notes: SYNOPSIS. The process of conjugation in a strain of Stylonychia muscorum Kahl is described. It follows the general pattern reported earlier in other Oxytrichidae, but the following peculiarities can be noted: 1) mating never occurs between individuals possessing only two micronuclei, 2)exchange of small macronuclear lobes can be occasionally observed, and 3) the reorganization of the exconjugants involves the quick, successive passage of a series of reorganization bands.

Notes: SYNOPSIS. Application of the triple stain of Grosso (methyl green-pyronin-orange G) to the exconjugants of different species of ciliates produces a differential coloration of their nuclei. Both the old macronucleus or its remnants and the micronuclei bind methyl green whereas the newly developing macronucleus (macronuclear anlage) has a selective affinity for the orange G present in the mixture. This finding holds true not only for hypotrichous ciliates, whose macronuclear anlagen are involved in the formation of polytene chromosomes, but also for other ciliates not included in the order Hypotrichida. Such a reaction of the new macronuclei apparently results from the presence of non-histone (acidic) proteins associated with the nucleic acids. The staining method is fully described to provide a more general application.

Notes: Summary The synthesis and the dinuclear or mononuclear nature of several molybdenum(VI) and molybdenum(V) oxocomplexes derived from 1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanedione (HLL) are described. These complexes were identified by i.r. and electronic spectra, magnetic susceptibility and analytical data, and are assigned the following formulae: [MoO2(LL)2], [Mo2O5(LL)2], [Mo2O4(LL)2], [MoOCl(LL)2], [MoCl2(LL)] and [MoO(OH)(LL)2)]. The low magnetic moments of the dinuclear complexes are due, in part, to intramolecular interactions. The i.r. data show that the dionate is bound by two oxygen atoms forming a chelate six-membered ring.
