Notes: This paper is devoted to the stability analysis of a vertical embankment in reinforced soil, assuming that a very large number of reinforcements are periodically distributed throughout the soil mass. The reinforced soil is modelled as a homogeneous medium that obeys a macroscopic yield condition. Two numerical formulations of the homogenized problem, derived from the lower and upper bound theorems of limit analysis, respectively, with a finite element discretization technique, are described. They both lead to a linear programming problem, which is carried out by means of XPRESS industrial LP code. The practical implementation of both the static and kinematic finite element programs on the case of a vertical reinforced earth wall results in close estimates of its failure height, which are in good agreement with available experimental data. This points to the ability of such programs to provide a rigorous evaluation of the limit loads of structures through the determination of lower bound and upper bound estimates sufficiently close to each other.

Notes: The study of the deviation of a crack reaching the interface separating two materials in a multilayer in a 4-point deflection is considered. This study is based on the use of special isoparametric finite elements.1 (The elements surrounding the crack tip have nodes placed at a distance α from the crack tip, and in this way we impose a singularity of the stresses in the neighbourhood of the crack.)The Erdogan2 criterion that estimates the deviation angle shows that this angle is a function of the initial angle of the crack, and the properties of each component of the multilayer.

Notes: The authors study the shape optimization of a complex cracked shell under complex criteria. The shell is one of various cases of a turboshaft, and optimization criteria are associated to the cost, the technology, and above all the working conditions for the turboshaft. The optimization criteria involved are of course the weight of the structure, but also the plastic instability and critical stress intensity factor. All computations have been made with the Ansys finite element program in which an optimization module exists.

Notes: In the design of members with flaws, it is necessary to keep the stress intensity factor K of any sharp crack below the fracture toughness Kcr of the materials. Stress-intensity factor equations for the more common basic specimen geometries and various loading conditions are available in the literature. The application of these equations to complex structures involves geometric problems such as the identification of the outline of each member and the sizing of the equivalent specimen for each flaw. The paper gives a response to such difficulties.
