Notes: The breeding cycle of an air-breathing Anabantid, Trichogaster pectoralis was studied in Malaysia. The species was found to breed all the year but with pronounced peaks of activity associated with the two wetter periods in the year. The advantages of this timing and the cues which stimulate gonadal activity are discussed. From the study of oocyte distribution in selected ovaries it was concluded that T. pectoralis is a total spawner although a batch of ripe oocytes may be released over an extended period of time. Fecundity was found to be related to length of fish by the formula (log10 Egg no.)=–4.6854+4.3080 log10 standard length (S.L.) (mm).

Notes: An extensive amount of work has been published on the treatment of heat transfer associated with phase change. A few recent advances are discussed in this paper with some emphasis on the phase change of metals. The apparent capacity, effective capacity, enthalpy, post iterative, source based and semi-analytical methods are discussed and relative advantages and disadvantages of each are analysed. Recent developments in nodelling the flow during pouring and natural convection with applications of two widely used convective liffusive codes, the Los Alamos MAC and the Imperial College TEACH, are presented. An alternative tream function-vorticity approach is also discussed. Applications of these methods to turbulent convection during mould filling and continuous casting are presented. Areas of interest for further research work are identified as modelling of turbulence in liquid metals, flow through mushy regions and improvement of the performance of weak methods in multidimensional problems when the ratio of latent heat to sensible heat is large.

Notes: A technique is proposed to model flows with free surfaces using the control volume method. The free surface is tracked by determining the locations of the ambient pressure in the domain. Special conditions are imposed on the nodes in the vicinity of the free surface. Flow visualization experiments are carried out to determine the free surface shapes and velocity distributions during the filling of a cylindrical container with water. Computations are carried out to model the flow in the experimental test case using a mesh transformation and the free surface treatment. The proposed free surface treatment yields results of better accuracy as compared with the results using the free slip condition. The predicted locations and heights of the spout are reasonable.
