Notes: Summary The effect of indenolol on heart rate and blood pressure at rest and after submaximal workload has been studied in 19 patients with established essential hypertension. A stepwise increase from moderate to submaximal exercise was chosen to mimic challenges normally occurring in daily life. After 4 weeks of once a day indenolol therapy a significant, gradual reduction in the following cardiovascular parameters was observed: heart rate at rest fell by 20%, 30% after exercise and 31% after recovery; systolic blood pressure showed a fall of 15% at rest, 19% after workload and 14% after recovery; the reduction in diastolic blood pressure was 15% at rest, 11% after exercise and 12% after recovery. The rate-pressure product was decreased by 32% at rest, 43% after exercise and 42% after recovery. It is concluded that the most important pharmacological effect of indenolol is the significant decrease in myocardial oxygen demand. In patients with essential hypertension indenolol not only produces a definite antihypertensive effect, but it also increases workload tolerance and decreases subjective symptoms during physical activity. Compliance was good and no severe side effects were observed.

Notes: Abstract. Twenty malignant lymphomas of northern pike, Esox lucius L., from the Baltic coast of Estonia were investigated immunohistochemically using rabbit anti-human polyclonal antibodies against lysozyme (LYS), alpha-1-antichymotrypsin (ACT) and S-100 protein. Based on the strongly positive reactions to LYS, ACT and S-100 found in a great number of histiocytes, two of these tumours were classified as histocytic diffuse malignant lymphomas. Furthermore, the weaker positive reaction to these antibodies detected in some of the histocytes in 10 other cases of diffuse malignant lymphoma indicates their histocytoid-lymphocytic origin. In addition, the lack of reaction to all antibodies used found in the remaining eight tumours, as well as their general morphological structure, allowed their diagnosis as lymphocytic diffuse malignant lymphomas. Thus, the immunohistochemical reactions to LYS, ACT and S-100 served as a tool for precisely distinguishing between the different types of lymphomas as well as for better understanding their origin.

Notes: Summary Surgical treatment may be needed where conservative treatment fails in the management of metatarsalgia secondary to pes planus transversus sometimes associated with shortening of the first metatarsal. The author's technique of operation was employed in 85 feet of 45 patients with satisfactory results in 89.4%. The operation consists of a single or double V-shaped osteotomy of the middle metatarsal bones performed in the dorso-plantar plane of the proximal metaphysis. This allows realignment of the metatarsal heads and additional shortening of these bones if necessary. This type of osteotomy is simple and stable with rapid bony union.
