Description / Table of Contents: Summary Previous work on the electrophoretic separation of rare earth mixtures inα-hydroxyisobutyric acid was continued using cellogel strips and radioactive tracers. The purity and sequence were determined byγ-spectrometric analysis and the decay of the various activities. The detection of rare earths by direct activation of the electropherogram is demonstrated. Mixtures containing all the lanthanoides are clearly separated.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A study was made of the application of high tension electrophoresis for the separation of mixtures of rare earths in a medium ofα-hydroxyisobutyric acid. Trials on paper and acetylcellulose films are described. After selected lanthanides had been successfully separated, it was possible eventually to separate all rare earths. The separation times were 15 to 20 minutes. A short discussion is given of the possibility of applying this procedure to transuranic earths.

Notes: Summary Thein situ impregnation of silica HPLC columns with HPLC Amine Modifier I yields columns that are useful for the analysis of carbohydrate mixtures. Compared with chemically-bonded amine phases the impregnated columns show a number of advantages that are briefly discussed. The application of this technique to sugar separation problems in food chemistry is demonstrated by way of a number of examples, including soft drinks, jams, fruit juices, maltodextrins and corn syrup.

Notes: Abstract The fatty acid fingerprints of total lipid extracts from the four fish parasitesAcanthocephalus lucii, Neoechinorhynchus rutili, Paratenuisentis ambiguus, andPomphorhynchus laevis were investigated by capillary gas-liquid chromatography (GLC). The fatty acid patterns of the parasites were compared with those of their respective host tissue, viz., intestinal tract tissue of infected perch, brown trout, eel, and chub. The highly complex gas chromatograms revealed significant differences not only between parasite and host tissue but also between the parasites themselves. For instance, all the parasites contained much more eicosapentaenoic acid (20∶5n-3) than did the respective fish intestinal tissue. Differences were also observed between the presoma and metasoma ofPomphorhynchus laevis.

Notes: Summary It is shown that the electrophoresis of rare earths on Cellogel in α-hydroxy-isobutyric acid is suitable for the separation of minute amounts of carrier-free activities from neutron-activated earths. This is demonstrated by a separation of promethium from neutron-activated neodymium, in which the purity of the separated activities is determined by their γ-spectra.

Notes: High resolution mass spectrometry has been employed to establish the structural formulae of the unique carotenoid pigment siphonaxanthin, its natural ester, siphonein and several derivatives. Siphonaxanthin exhibits a fragmentation reaction that is unusual among carotenoid pigments, namely, the elimination of carbon dioxide, observed as [M - CO2] and [M - (CO2 + H2O)]. This reaction involves the migration of an oxygen atom. Siphonaxanthol, a partially hydrogenated siphonaxanthin, exhibits a similar reaction involving the elimination of carbon monoxide and formaldehyde. From the fragmentation of derivatives of siphonaxanthin, such as the triacetate, the dimethyl ether and siphonaxanthol, and also from the fragmentation of related pigments, such as loroxanthin and fucoxanthin, the unique structural units responsible for the elimination of the carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide have been identified.
