    Notizen: A new electrically conducting composite film from polypyrrole and 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)-bis(phthalic anhydride)-based polyimide was prepared. Pyrrole and the dopant ion can easily penetrate through the polyimide substrate and electropolymerize on the platinum (Pt) electrode due to the swelling of the polyimide on the metal electrode. The electrochemical properties of polypyrrole-polyimide (PPy/PI) composite films have been investigated by using cyclic voltammetry. The PPy/PI composite film is suitable for use as the electroactive material owing to its stable and controllable electrochemical properties. The electrical conductivity of composites falls in the range 0.0035-15 S/cm. Scanning electron micrograph, FTIR, and thermal studies indicate that PPy and PI form a homogeneous material rather than a simple mixture. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notizen: Conducting polymer composites of polythiophene, using a polyamide as the insulating matrix, were prepared via electrochemical methods. The characterization of the composite was done by scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared and pyrolysis studies. The conductivities were measured by a four-probe technique. The cited methods revealed that the composites have properties different from those of simple mechanical mixtures of the two polymers.

    Notizen: Electrochemical polymerization of aniline, on a Pt foil electrode coated with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), produces a homogeneous, free-standing, flexible, and conductive polymer film. The conductivity of the films depends on the aniline content and reaches 0.1-0.2 S/cm for films having aniline content of 15% or more. The optimum thickness of precoated PMMA to obtain durable conducting films was found to be in the range of 10-15 μm. Cyclic voltammetric investigation revealed that aniline exhibits a similar electrochemical behavior on a PMMA coated platinum electrode similar to a bare Pt surface. The film gives a fast and reproducible response against ammonia gas within a concentration range of 1.0-0.01%. Scanning electron micrographs indicate that the films have a rough structure consisting of globular regions. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: A new conducting composite of polypyrrole (PPy) has been prepared electrochemically where polytetramethylbisphenol A carbonate is used as the insulating matrix polymer. Characterization of the freestanding films of the composites were based on scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and Fourier transform infrared studies as well as electrical conductivity measurements and solubility. Electrical conductivities were measured by a four-probe technique. Spectroscopic methods, together with conductivity and solubility studies, indicate that the synthesized composite is a homogeneous blend of the two polymers. No evidence of hydrogen bonding in the composite or grafting of the two polymers has been found, contrary to the PPy-polybisphenol A carbonate case. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: We here report the boron trifluoride diethyletherate initiated polymerization of χ-methylstyrene in 1,2-dichloroethane. With platinum foil electrodes and an applied electric field of 1-3kV/cm, the initial rate of disappearance of monomer is the same in the absence or presence of the electric field. The rate of formation of polymer at high conversions, however, decreases when the electric field is imposed. The NMR, UV absorption, and fluorescence spectra of the polymers are affected by the field, whereas the IR, ESCA spectra, and melting point of the polymer are unaffected by the field. To probe the reasons for these field effects, we obtained oxidation and reduction potentials of monomer, solvent, and initiator by polarographic or cyclic voltammetric methods. All the components of the system were easily reduced or oxidized. Also, when the anode and cathode were separated by a sintered glass disk, the amount of polymer formed in the anode compartment was greater than that in the cathode compartment. These results suggest that the observed electric field effects are due to electrochemical reactions rather than to the second Wien effect.

    Notizen: Electroinitiated cationic polymerization of olefins can be initiated by direct electron transfer from the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of monomers, by constant potential electrolysis. Potentials, at which some monomers lose electrons, were measured by cyclic voltammetry. Measurements were made on a Pt electrode versus Ag0/Ag+, in acetonitrile. The measured anodic peak potentials (Ep,a) were correlated to HOMO energies (∊m), calculated by Hückel molecular orbital (HMO) considerations for coplanar molecules. For methyl-substituted monomers the ω-technique was also applied. A linear equation has been developed for Ep,a as a function of ∊m, for styrene derivatives having +I and +E substituents.

    Notizen: β-Galactosidase (EC 3.2.1.23) was immobilised onto a gelatin carrier system by crosslinking. Glutaraldehyde and chromium(III) acetate were used as crosslinking agents. The effect of pH on enzyme activity, kinetic parameters and reusability of the immobilised enzyme were investigated. To obtain a better relative activity, a method was developed and further modified to increase the surface area of the support system by using polyacrylamide. Relative activity enhancement of 68% was achieved in the gelatin-glutaraldehyde system.
