    Notes: Under salt-stress conditions, Arabidopsis salt overly sensitive (sos) mutants show hypersensitive root growth. The sos gene products are involved in ion transport and signalling processes. To analyse salt-stress-responsive genes whose transcripts are regulated by the SOS signalling pathway, we used a 22K Agilent oligoarray and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analyses. The amounts of transcripts of the major salt-inducible genes (RD29A/COR78, RD17/COR47, COR15A, KIN1, and RD22) in sos mutants were similar to those in the wild-type plants. These results indicate that the SOS3/SOS2 signalling pathway is independent of the DRE/CRT, ABRE, and MYC/MYB pathways. In sos2 mutants, the expression levels of 27 and 48 genes were up-regulated at least double under 2-h and 5-h salt stress conditions, respectively. Among the genes regulated by SOS2, we detected several encoding myb family transcription factors, AP2 transcription factors, and some ethylene-related, auxin-induced, and defence-related genes. On the other hand, expression levels of very few genes were different between sos3 mutant and wild-type plants. This observation indicates that the downstream SOS2 affects the regulation of stress-responsive genes much more strongly than the upstream SOS3. The gene expression profiles of sos2 and sos3 mutants were not identical. This indicates that SOS2 and SOS3 have individual roles in salt stress responses in addition to common roles.

    Notes: Abstract We herein report a rare case of quadrule carcinoma with heterochronous bilateral breast cancer, cancer of Vater's papilla, and cancer of the urinary bladder, which were all curatively resected. A 62-year-old woman previously underwent right and left modified radical mastectomies heterochronously. Recently, a dilatation of the lower bile duct, diagnosed as cancer of Vater's papilla, was resected by a pancreatoduodenectomy. Hematuria during surgery led to the discovery of a solid bladder tumor. The tumor was resected by a transurethral resection. The histopathologic findings differed for all four lesions. The patient had an uneventful postoperative course and to date has shown no recurrence.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of 2-guanidinoethanol (GEt) on the release of monoamines and on the activity of their degrading enzymes were studied in order to investigate why 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) increased to a much greater extent than homovanillic acid (HVA) after GEt injection into rat brain. In differential pulse voltammograms recorded using an electrochemically treated carbon fiber electrode, two distinct oxidation peaks, one at 130mV (DOPAC peak) and the other at 300 mV (5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) peak), were observed. In the hippocampus, the DOPAC peak increased markedly compared to the peak height recorded prior to the intracerebroventricular injection of GEt (6μmol). Although the DOPAC peak height increased to 350% 4 hours after GEt injection, the 5-HIAA peak showed no change. In the striatum, the DOPAC peak increased to 150% 3 hours after GEt injection. Serial changes in the extracellular levels of DOPAC, HVA, and 5-HIAA were monitored in the striatum after GEt injection, using an in vivo brain micro-dialysis technique. Although the DOPAC levels strated to increase 80 minutes after GEt injection, HVA and 5-HIAA levels showed no change. On the other hand, monoamineoxidase, which metabolizes dopamine to DOPAC, was not activated and catechol-0-methyltransferase, which metabolizes DOPAC to HVA, were not inhibited by 5 mM of GEt in vitro. These data suggested that GEt increased the release of dopamine, but not of serotonin, and that GEt might restrict the DOPAC transport system.

    Notes: Abstract The contents of monoamines and their metabolites in rat brains 3 hours after the intracerebroventricular injection of 6 μmol of 2-guanidino-ethanol (GEt) were measured by HPLC. GEt which is a configurational analogue of 4-aminobutanoic acid (GABA) induced severe running fits and tonic-clonic convulsions as well as epileptic discharges. In GEt-administered rats, dopamine (DA) decreased in the cortex, hippocampus and hypothalamus. 3,4-Dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) increased to about the same level in all brain regions, therefore the distribution of DOPAC appeared to be homogeneous in the brain. The homovanillic acid levels also increased in the striatum and hippocampus. No significant change in the norepinephrine contents was observed in any region. The turnover ratio of DA increased significantly except in the striatum. Serotonin levels increased in the hypothalamus and midbrain by GEt administration, though 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid levels showed no change in any of the brain regions. These data suggest that the activity of dopaminergic and serotonergic neurons are increased by GEt.
