Notes: Abstract We have reviewed the growth of 98 boys and 34 girls with constitutional delay of growth and puberty followed until final height. At presentation chronological age was 14.1 (1.3) years (SD) in the boys and 13.0 (1.3) years in the girls. At presentation all patients were either prepubertal or in early pubertal maturation (4 ml testicular volume in the boys and breast stage II in the girls). Twenty-nine boys (30%) and 2 girls (6%) were treated with either sex or anabolic steroids. Mean height SDS in the boys at presentation was −2.7 (0.7) which rose to −1.9 (0.9) at final height attainment. This was significantly lower than the predicted final height SDS of −1.4 (0.8) and mid-parental height SDS of −0.5 (0.7). Similar results were obtained for the girls with a height SDS at presentation of −3.2 (0.8) which increased to −2.3 (0.7) at final height which was significantly lower than predicted final height SDS of −1.7 (0.6) and mid-parental height SDS of −0.8 (0.8). Both sexes had a relatively short sitting height at presentation; sitting height SDS −3.4 (1.0) and subischial leg length SDS −2.2 (1.0) in the boys and sitting height SDS −3.6 (1.1) and subischial leg length SDS −2.5 (0.7) in the girls. The relative disproportion between the segments had no significant change at final height. We are unable to explain the failure to achieve final height potential and the relatively disproportionate stature. Our data suggest that the late timing of the onset of puberty may be deleterious to spinal growth and consequently final height. The relatively short spinal length at presentation of constitutional delay of growth and puberty does not correct at the attainment of final stature.

Notes: New and future indications for the treatment of disorders of the alimentary tract using local injections of botulinum toxin are reviewed. Clinical experience shows that overactive smooth muscle sphincters may be weakened to treat disorders such as achalasia or chronic anal fissure. By contrast, injections placed into the sphincter of Oddi have proven less effective for post-cholecystectomy pain syndrome. Experimental evidence suggests that food intake may be reduced by weakening the distal stomach with botulinum toxin. This approach may possibly lead to the treatment of obesity. There are some new possible indications for the use of botulinum toxin on the alimentary tract, and infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis seems to be the most promising new development.

Notes: Background : Botulinum neurotoxin induces healing in patients with idiopathic fissure. The optimal dosage is not well established.Aim : To compare the efficacy and tolerability of two different formulations of type A botulinum neurotoxin, and to provide more evidence with regard to the choice of dosage regimens. Methods : Symptomatic adults with chronic anal fissure were enrolled in a randomized study. The outcome of each group was evaluated clinically, and by comparing the pressure of the anal sphincters before and after treatment. Results : Fifty patients received injections of 50 units of Botox formulation (group I), and 50 patients received injections of 150 units of Dysport toxin (group II). One month after injection, 11 patients in group I and eight in group II had mild incontinence of flatus. At the 2-month evaluation point, 46 patients in group I and 47 patients in group II had a healing scar. In group I patients, the mean resting anal pressure was 41.8% lower, and the maximum voluntary squeeze pressure was 20.2% lower, than the baseline value. In group II patients, the resting anal pressure and maximum voluntary squeeze pressure were 60.0 ± 12.0 mmHg and 71.0 ± 30.0 mmHg, respectively. There were no relapses during an average of about 21 months of follow-up.Conclusions : Botulinum neurotoxin may be considered an effective treatment in patients with chronic anal fissure. The efficacy and tolerability of the two different formulations of botulinum neurotoxin were indistinguishable.

Notes: Abstract Partially hydrolyzed ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers were modified by the covalent binding of a heparin-complexing polymer and further heparinized in order to improve their blood compatibility. These heparinizable polymeric materials (EVAPA) were obtained by a two-step reaction between an ethylene/vinyl alcohol/vinyl acetate (EVALVA) terpolymer, and the heparin complexing polymer N2LL. The physico-chemical characterization of EVALVA, EVAPA and heparinized-EVAPA was carried out through thermal analysis, SEM, contact angle, potentiometric measurements, water uptake and FT-IR spectroscopic measurements. The biocompatibility of the above-mentioned samples was evaluated usingin vitro methods, through the determination of heparin release in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) and in human plasma, and with the investigation of hemostasis activation.

Notes: Summary The distribution and density of3H-MPP+ binding sites were studied by in vitro quantitative autoradiography in the brain of the mouse, rat and monkey. The highest levels of3H-MPP+ specific binding were observed in rat brain. The substantia nigra in rat and monkey, and the anterior caudate-putamen formation in mouse and monkey showed the lowest density of autoradiographic grains. The presence of a relatively high density of MPP+ sites in the hippocampus of all species studied could be of interest to explain some effects of MPTP administration on convulsions caused by chemoconvulsants. The finding of a 60–70% reduction of3H-MPP+ binding sites in the rat caudate-putamen, on the side of quinolinic acid infusion and no changes after 6-hydroxydopamine lesion of dopaminergic nigrostriatal neurons suggests the presence of these sites mainly on striatal cells. The results suggest that the distribution of MPP+ binding sites in brain would not seem to be related to MPTP toxicity.

Notes: Summary A case of oculomandibular dyscephaly (Hallermann-Streiff syndrome) associated with severe oligophrenia and consequent behavioral disorders is reported. The not infrequent association of oculomandibular dyscephaly and oligophrenia suggests that the same unknown embryopathy could damage the structures derived from the first branchial arch and the CNS.

Notes: Abstract Research on students' conceptions about the Earth and its place in the universe has been active since 1976. These years have also witnessed the development of the constructivist model of learning and a growing interest in epistemological and historical considerations among science educators. The paper presents a critical review of the research in the light of epistemological, historical and cognitive aspects. The analysis shows that, as far as the research on the shape of the Earth is concerned, the research results are valid and conclusive in giving general information about children's ideas. The same cannot be said for the research concerned with the position of the Earth in the Universe, where the Copernican model, seen as the final essence of astronomical concepts, drives the research questioning with little correlation of the model with the empirical level of observation.
