Notes: Abstract The co-localization of NACP/α-synuclein and tau epitopes was examined in the brain stem and hippocampal formation in two patients from a family of autosomal dominant parkinsonism and dementia with Lewy bodies (LBs) without two reported missense mutations in the NACP gene. Double-labeling immunofluorescence study revealed that some brain stem LBs, cortical LBs, pale bodies, Lewy-related neurites, and neurofibrillary tangles expressed both NACP epitopes and the PHF tau AT8 epitope. Double-immunolabeling electron microscopy demonstrated that the NACP antibody selectively labeled 9- to 13-nm-thick straight filaments (LB filaments), whereas AT8 recognized twisted tubules with 80- to 100-nm-interval constrictions in the same neuronal inclusions. We show that NACP and tau aggregate into different filamentous components even if both proteins are incorporated into the same inclusions.

Notes: The ac electrical behavior of the polycrystalline yttria was evaluated in the temperature range of 800–1300 °C in air as a function of frequency (5 Hz≤f≤13 MHz). Resistance-temperature and resistance-time (aging) characteristics were examined using immittance measurements and electron microscopy to establish microstructure-property relationships. The ac electrical data indicated two distinct relaxations when analyzed in the impedance plane. These relaxations are attributed to the lumped grain and grain-boundary contributions in conjunction with a polarization effect at the electrode/sample interface. The admittance plane analysis revealed a semicircular relaxation in the low-frequency region, indicative of a trapping effect associated with grain-boundaries and the electrode/sample interface. The variation in the total electrical resistance with time is found to be dependent on the starting microstructure of the sample. A sample with a larger grain size shows a smaller degree of aging at elevated temperatures. Immittance measurements suggest that the major contribution to the aging behavior comes from the evolution in the microstructure. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A realistic model of transport properties of zinc oxide varistors is constructed from two-dimensional Voronoi networks and studied via computer simulations. In agreement with experimental microcontact measurements made on individual junctions, the networks are assumed to contain randomly distributed microjunctions of two types: (1) electrically active with highly nonlinear current-voltage (I-V) characteristics and (2) ohmic, i.e., with linear I-V characteristics. Effects of the ohmic grain boundaries in the network are simulated for various concentrations and resistivities. Shapes of the simulated I-V characteristics and current dependence of the coefficient of nonlinearity of the network are in good agreement with those experimentally observed for thin varistor samples and in the measurements employing various surface electrode patterns. It is found that the breakdown voltage of the networks increases with the number of the ohmic grain boundaries, except when their resistivity is so low that it becomes comparable with that of the ZnO grains. The maximal value of the coefficient of nonlinearity of the network is shown to be insensitive to the presence of the ohmic grain boundaries, regardless of their resistivity and concentration. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract This experiment was carried out in the framework of a project to develop a viable fish polyculture technology under Bangladeshi conditions that allows simultaneous fish production of small indigenous species for farm families' consumption and of large carp species as a cash crop. The polyculture included the large carp rohu, catla and mirror carp as cash crop fish, and the small indigenous fish punti and mola as food for the small-scale household. Total large carp stocking density was 10 000 fish ha−1, at a species ratio 1:1:1. Total small fish stocking densities were 0, 25 000 or 50 000 fish ha−1. The objectives were to assess the effects of adding 25 000 punti and/or mola ha−1 on the large carp and environment, and to assess the effects of punti on mola and mola on punti. It was found that catla was not affected by the addition of small fish in any of the combinations tested; rohu was not affected by punti, and mola reduced rohu performance by 30–40% only when punti was not present; mirror carp was not affected by punti, and mola increased mirror carp growth rate and harvesting weight by 25–30% whether punti was present or not; small fish did not significantly affect total yield and food conversion ratio; punti performance was not affected by mola; mola harvesting weight was not affected by punti, while mola harvesting numbers and biomass were reduced by 55–65% by punti. Factor analysis of water quality data identified photosynthesis–respiration and algal biomass– temperature as the main processes governing water quality. Effects of treatment on those water quality factors are analysed, and the fish–water quality relationships discussed. In a parallel polyculture experiment in 25 farm ponds, the performance of large carp species was found to be unaffected by the addition of punti and/or mola. The results indicate that, at the densities tested, punti and mola addition to the large carp polyculture is viable as they do not reduce cash crop production and might be a good food source for the farmer's family.

Notes: Electrical transport in zinc oxide varistors is simulated using two-dimensional Voronoi networks. The networks are assumed to contain randomly distributed grain boundaries of three electrical types: (1) high nonlinearity (i.e., "good'') junctions; (2) poor nonlinearity (i.e., "bad'') junctions; and (3) linear with low-resistivity (i.e., ohmic) junctions. These type classifications are those found in experimental measurements. By varying the type concentrations, the simulated current density versus electric field (J–E) characteristics can be made to conform to the different experimentally observed characteristics of ZnO varistors. These characteristics include the sharpness of switching at the transition between ohmic and nonlinear J–E response (i.e., knee region), as well as the degree of nonlinearity. It is shown that the reduction of the nonlinearity coefficient of bulk varistors, relative to that of isolated grain boundaries, can be explained only by the presence of "bad'' varistor junctions. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This experiment was carried out in the framework of a project to develop a viable fish polyculture technology under Bangladeshi conditions that allows simultaneous fish production of small indigenous species for the farmers' family consumption and of large carp species as a cash crop. The objectives of this experiment were to assess the effects of adding punti and mola in different proportions on the large carp and on the environment, and to assess the effects of punti on mola and mola on punti. The polyculture included the large carp rohu, catla and common carp (as cash crop fish), and the small indigenous fish punti and mola (as food for the small-scale farmer family). The total large carp stocking density was 10 000 fish ha−1, at a species ratio of 1:1:1. The total small fish stocking densities were 0 in the control and 30 000 punti and mola ha−1 in the treatments, these at rates 2:1, 1:1 and 1:2. Stocking punti and mola at the density and all ratios tested were viable solutions to obtain simultaneously large carp cash crops and small fish to feed the farmer's family. Statistically marginal differences in large carp production were obtained in stocking small fish in the different proportions. These marginal differences could be explained by food competition between punti and common carp and between mola and rohu, which had different outcomes depending on the proportions of the small fish stocked. Stocking punti and mola at a 1:1 ratio would result in more small fish for the farmer's family, while the individual size of rohu, the most expensive large carp, would be somewhat smaller, but not necessarily small enough to decrease its selling price. Stocking one of the small fish in higher proportion than the other (2:1 or 1:2) would result in less mola for the family consumption, while harvesting of common carp would be somewhat lower and of smaller fish. Since common carp is the cheapest of the large carps, this small reduction would not necessarily affect the family income in an important way. With these results, farmers would now be able to reorganize their stocking practices with large carps and small fish and decide the appropriate small fish stocking ratios to meet their needs.

Θ w . Bis ξ = 10 lieferten beide Methoden sehr gut übereinstimmende Ergebnisse.
Notes: Abstract A free convertion flow of an optically dense viscous incompressible fluid along a vertical thin circular cylinder has been studied with effect of radiation when the surface temperature is uniform. With appropriate transformations, the boundary layer equations governing the flow are reduced to local nonsimilarity equations. Solutions of the governing equations are obtained employing the implicit finite difference methods together with Keller box scheme as well the local nonsimilarity method with second order truncation for all ξ (nondimensional transverse curvature parameter) in the interval [0,10] and are expressed in terms of local Nusselt number for a range of values of the pertinent parameters. Effects of pertinent parameters, such as, the radiation parameter, R d , the surface temperature parameter, θ w , taking Prandtl number, Pr, equals 0.7 on the velocity and temperature field are also presented graphically. From the solution it is seen that increase of R d , or θ w leads to increase in the local rate of heat transfer coefficients. Results obtained by both the methods are obtained in excellent agreement between each other upto ξ = 10.

Notes: Summary The sterol constituents of the unsaponifiable fractions derived from the fats of Cucurbita pepo and Sinapis arvensis seeds and that of Clerodendron inerm leaves were seemingly uniform by the conventional thin-layer chromatographic methods. The mass spectra of these sterols, however, indicated that they were mixtures of several components. A study of the fragmentation behaviour was useful in indicating the number of component sterols in a given mixture and in giving information about their probable structures. The examples given illustrate the utility of mass spectrometry in the analysis of sterol mixtures.

Notes: Summary The effect of conduction-radiation on natural convection flow of an optically dense viscous incompressible fluid along an isothermal cylinder of elliptic cross section has been investigated. The boundary layer equations governing the flow are shown to be nonsimilar. Full numerical solutions of the governing equations are obtained using the implicit finite difference method. The solutions are expressed in terms of the Nusselt number Nu against the eccentric angle α in the range [0, π]. The working fluid is taken to have unit value of the Prandtl number, Pr, and the effects of varying the Planck number,R d, the surface temperature parameter, θw, and the parameterA O representing the ratio of the major and minor axes of the cylinder are investigated. From the present analysis it is found that the rate of heat transfer from the slender body is higher than from the blunt body and that these higher values become even higher due to an increase in the effect of radiation in the flow field.

Notes: Abstract The a.c. electrical response of undoped polycrystalline calcium zirconate was evaluated at elevated temperatures (900≤T≤1400°C) in air as a function of frequency in the range 5 Hz to 13 MHz. A systematic analysis of the a.c. electrical data revealed semicircular relaxation(s) in the impedance, admittance and modulus planes. An equivalent circuit model, representing grain and grain-boundary regions, is proposed. This circuit can be transformed to another representation which incorporates a possible trapping effect across the grain boundaries. The equivalence of these two representations is demonstrated by examining the correspondence between the two sets of circuit elements without resorting to empirical distributed-element models.
