    Notes: Although approximately 50% of patients with non-invasive (Ta) papillary transitional cell carcinoma show no recurrence of their disease, current histopathological approaches cannot distinguish this sub-group from those patients in whom the disease will recur. In this 5 year retrospective study, we have shown that cytokeratin 20 (CK20) was expressed in 19 of 29 (65.5%) of non-invasive papillary tumours of grades 1 or 2. CK20 expression patterns were predictive of disease non-recurrence in a sub-group of eight patients, representing 51.7% of patients with non-recurrent disease. In normal bladder mucosa, CK20 expression was restricted to the terminally-differentiated superficial cell. In eight CK20-positive tumours which showed no recurrence at 5 years, CK20 expression was either restricted to, or most intense in, the luminal cells of the papillae. This pattern of expression was not seen in any of the 15 tumours from the recurrent group. Disruption of normal CK20 expression was highly significantly correlated with recurrent tumours. These results suggest that changes in the expression of differentiation-associated antigens, such as CK20, may be useful in predicting benign versus malignant behaviour and may, therefore, be useful in defining treatment strategies.

    Notes: Abstract Tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) is a rare serious acute complication of cancertherapy, reported mainly following chemotherapy in patients with large tumorload and chemosensitive disease. These are mainly patients with non-Hodgkin'slymphoma, leukemia and rarely in solid tumors. It is less frequently describedafter radiotherapy for lymphoid and hematological malignancies. TLS followingradiotherapy for solid tumors is a very rare complication. In thisreport/review we describe a seventy-three-year-old male patient withprogressive metastatic carcinoma of the breast to the lungs, liver and bone.He was referred for radiotherapy because of generalized bony pains. Thepatient was planned for sequential hemi-body irradiation starting with themore symptomatic upper half body. After premedication, he was given 8.5 Gy tothe mid point at the maximum chest separation with anterior lung attenuatorlimiting uncorrected lung dose to 6.15 Gy. A further 3.5 Gy electron boost tothe fungating breast tumor was given to the 100%. Forty-eight hours after irradiation he developed hyperkalemia,hyperphosphatemia, hyperuricemia, hypocalcemia and renal failure. Theseclinical and biochemical changes are typical of tumor lysis syndrome (TLS).Despite hydration, and treating the hyperuricemia, the patient developed comaand died eight days after irradiation. The prophylaxis and management of TLS and in high-risk patients aredescribed to avoid this frequently fatal complication.

    Notes: Summary A phase diagram of an aqueous iron-sulfur system constructed from thermodynamic data for initial concentrations of 100 ppm H2S and 100 ppm Fe permitted us to predict that the principal precipitate found in the Eh - pH range of flooded Louisiana rice paddys would be FeS2. Analysis of precipitates formed in the laboratory at Eh and pH levels simulating paddy conditions showed that both FeS2 and FeS were present; however more FeS than predicted was actually precipitated in the FeS2 field of dominance. A multiparameter diagram for an aqueous system was constructed relating equilibrium iron concentration, Eh, pH and the equilibrium H2S concentration (that H2S which is in equilibrium with precipitated sulfides). It was demonstrated from the diagram and associated thermodynamic equations that the H2S⇌FeS2 equilibrium predicts theoritical values of H2S in agreement with experimental values of H2S from rice paddy soil samples8.

    Notes: Cell-free extracts of 3-4 days old mats of nitrate-grown Penicillium citrinum catalyze the hydrolytic cleavage of the N-glycosidic bonds of inosine, guanosine and adenosine optimally at pH 4, 0.1 M citrate buffer. The same extracts catalyze the hydrolytic deamination of cytidine at a maximum rate in 0.08 M Tris-acetate buffer pH 6.5, 40°C and 50°C were the most suitable degrees for purine nucleoside hydrolysis and cytidine deamination, respectively. The incubation of the extracts at 60°C, in the absence of cytidine caused a loss in the deaminating activity, while freezing and thawing had no effect on both activities. The deaminating activity seems to be cytidine specific as neither cytosine, adenine, adenosine nor guanosine could be deaminated. Uridine competively inhibited this activity, while ammonia had no effect. The apparent Km value of this enzyme for cytidine was 1.57×10-3M and its Ki value for uridine was 7.8×10-3M. The apparent Km values of the N-glycosidic bond cleaving enzyme for inosine, guanosine and adenosine were 13.3, 14.2 and 20×10-3 M, respectively.
