Abstract α-LiFeO2, which has the rocksalt structure, loses lithium when it is heated in air at temperatures bove about 1000°C. The consequent non-stoichiometry is retained by rapid quenching, but slower rates of cooling are accompanied by precipitation of the ferri-magnetic spinel, LiFe5O8. The size, shape, and structure of the precipitate particles depends upon the thermal treatment of the samples.
