    Notes: The heads of three-day old rats were irradiated with a single dose of 200 r x-ray and the animals were killed afterwards at intervals ranging from ten minutes to five days. Necrosis in the external granular layer of the cerebellum was evident by the fourth hour and the pyknotic cells increased in number up to 12 hours after irradiation. Between 24 to 48 hours all the pyknotic cells disappeared and the width of the layer was drastically reduced. By the third day after irradiation the external granular layer began to increase in width, and by the fourth day it was indistinguishable from normal. In adults of this group the cerebellum appeared structurally normal. In another experiment the cerebellum of rats was exposed from birth onward to 200 r on five successive days. In the animals killed immediately or one day after the last radiation session the external granular layer was totally or subtotally eradicated. In the animals surviving for four days the external granular layer reappeared over many regions of the cerebellum, and by the sixth day after irradiation it was present over its entire surface. In the latter group in animals that survived to 30 and 90 days of age the cerebellum contained a large, though subnormal, population of granule cells, indicating that the reconstituted cells were able to differentiate. These results suggested that the proliferative matrix of the postnatally developing cerebellum may be endowed with regenerative capacity.

    Notes: The problem of scattering from bodies in free space is formulated using a differential equation approach. The finite element mesh extends outward into the far field region of the scattering body, where the outer boundary condition is evaluated using the asymptotic expression for the scattered field. Numerical results for two scattering bodies are presented and discussed. Non-physical, standing waves appear in the results due to the inadequacy of the outer boundary condition in fulfilling the radiation condition for the scattered field. The differential equation approach does not appear to be competitive with integral equation approaches for thin bodies, but seems promising for handling scattering from thick inhomogeneous bodies into which the field penetrates.

    Notes: A one-dimensional exterior electromagnetic scattering problem is formulated using a differential equation approach followed by a finite element discretization. By interpreting the resulting linear algebraic equations as node voltage equations for a transmission line, a boundary element is obtained which satisfies the requirement of no wave reflection at the edge of the finite element region. Numerical results which show the elimination of non-physical standing waves from the scattered field are presented and discussed.

    Notes: Many structural optimization methods use geometric length scales as well as artificially imposed lengths such as finite element dimensions. One considers functions defined over these dimensions in characterizing and solving the problem. The natural length scales involved in the proposed design change are generally overlooked. When one proposes an optimization based on change of certain panels in a sheet metal structure, for instance, it might be helpful to use the dimensions of the redesign areas as characteristic lengths. In the present study, a Rayleigh-Ritz approach is taken where the responses of a structure to pseudo-loads (acting only over specified design-change regions) are employed as basis vectors. It is found that convergence of the optimization process is improved. The method is demonstrated for moderate-sized problems, and as with other modal methods, should become even more helpful for large problems. The new complexity involved is the requirement for a type of problem-dependent linking, in parallel with the conventional design variable linking. This can be automated. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
