Notes: Summary The authors studied the morphological and structural aspects of the junctions between the hepatic veins and the inferior vena cava. The study was carried out on 20 specimens obtained from adult cadavers of both sexes, fixed in 10% formaldehyde solution. The hepatic veins with their junctions on the inferior vena cava were isolated. Then a macroscopic analysis of the openings of the hepatic veins into the inferior vena cava was performed. Part of this material was embedded in paraffin, submitted to serial sectioning and stained with Azan's trichrome and resorcin-fuchsin. Three hepatic veins were observed in all cases: right, left and the middle. In 20% of the cases the middle hepatic vein opens directly into the inferior vena cava. The hepatic vein openings are supported by two pillars inferiorly united through a semilunar fold. The hepatic vein wall is greatly thickened at the level of its junction with the inferior vena cava, showing a large ammont of muscular and collagenous fibers. These bundles constitute a sphincter-like formation which may play a physiological role in the control of the hepatic circulation.

Notes: The theory of distributions in non-Riemannian spaces is used to obtain exact static thin domain wall solutions of Einstein-Cartan equations of gravity. Curvature δ-singularities are found while Cartan torsion is given by Heaviside functions. Weitzenböck planar walls are characterized by torsion δ-singularities and zero curvature. It is shown that Weitzenböck static thin domain walls do not exist exactly as in general relativity. The global structure of Weitzenböck nonstatic torsion walls is investigated. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In the title 6–6–6–5 fused ring compound, C19H28O, all the ring junctions are trans. The unsaturated ring A shows a conformation intermediate between a 10β-sofa and a 1α,10β-half-chair.

Notes: In the title compound, C23H34O4, the two saturated six-membered rings have slightly flattened chair conformations and the unsaturated ring assumes a 8β,9α-half chair conformation distorted towards a 8β-sofa. The five-membered ring has an unusual conformation close to a 13β-envelope. The acetoxy and methyl ketone substituents are twisted with respect to the average molecular plane of the steroid nucleus. The molecules are hydrogen-bonded head-to-head via the hydroxy and methyl ketone groups forming dimers, which are stacked in planes perpendicular to the b axis.

Notes: A theory for the order in σ phases based on the sphere-packing model of Wilson & Spooner [Acta Cryst. (1973), A29, 342-352] has been examined using a mathematical analysis. The analysis suggests that the prediction of order in these phases based on lattice-constant variations associated with variations in atomic diameter should be treated with caution, particularly where the results are at variance with experimentally determined results.

Notes: Objective:  To evaluate the presence of some criteria in cervical smears with atypical glandular cells and their correlation with histological patterns to identify pre-neoplastic and neoplastic lesions. Methods:  Seventy-three women referred with an atypical glandular cell smear, who had undergone conization or hysterectomy, were included in this study. Referral Pap smears were reviewed using the set of 27 cyto-morphological criteria that was correlated with the histological diagnosis. Results:  Histological results showed intraepithelial or invasive neoplasia in 35 (48%) cases and benign lesions in 38 (52%) cases. After logistic regression and decision tree analysis an increased nuclear/cytoplasmic ratio and the presence of dyskeratotic cells were strongly associated with intraepithelial or invasive neoplasia and the differential cyto-morphological criteria for glandular lesions were decreased cytoplasm, irregular nuclear membranes and the presence of nucleoli. Conclusion:  The analysis of individual cyto-morphological criteria can better predict intraepithelial or invasive neoplasia and differentiate glandular from squamous lesions.

Notes: We present experimental results on the growth and structure of Fe overlayers deposited on Cu84Al16(100) and discuss the correlation between the structural and magnetic properties of this system. Fe films 1–6 monolayers (ML) thick were grown under molecular beam epitaxy conditions onto the clean substrate at 160 K. Electron diffraction was applied to investigate the structure of the Fe films. The magnetic properties were investigated in situ by surface magneto-optical Kerr effect in the longitudinal geometry. Our results show that the onset of in-plane ferromagnetism around 3.5 ML of Fe coincides with structural changes that suggest a transformation within the Fe films from a fcc-like (100) to a bcc-like (110) structure with increasing Fe thickness, starting from 2.5 ML. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The specificity of B lymphocytes activated in the acute phase of murine Trypanosoma cruzi infection was analysed in a panel of immunoglobulin-secreting hybridomas derived by fusion of lymph node cells 7 days after intraperitoneal parasite inoculation. The immunoglobulin isotype distribution of the hybrids reflected the total plaque-forming cell (PFC) response in the animal at this point, with a predominance of IgG2a, IgM, and IgG2b. Screening of the hybridoma antibodies on parasite antigens by three independent methods (western blot, ELISA, and immunofluorescence) revealed only one (out of a total of 51) that bound a parasite molecule with an apparent molecular mass of 180 kDa. In contrast, antibodies of both IgM and IgG classes were found to react with a panel of autologous antigens. These results establish that most B cells activated by T. cruzi infection are not specific for parasite antigens and therefore indicate the relevance of analysing the totality of host responses to infection.
