    Notes: An inelastic neutron scattering experiment has been performed on supercritical water at high momentum transfer, up to 90 Å−1, in order to study single proton dynamics. The value of the proton mean kinetic energy has been extracted in the framework of the impulse approximation. The anisotropy of the proton momentum distribution inside a single water molecule is discussed. The extracted experimental mean kinetic energy is found in good agreement with the predictions of a harmonic model, under the assumptions of decoupling between translational, rotational and vibrational degrees of freedom. Differences emerge between our results and those obtained in a recent inelastic neutron scattering experiment on water in sub- and supercritical conditions. These differences are pointed out and examined in detail. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An incoherent inelastic neutron scattering experiment on polycrystalline ice Ih at T=20 K is reported. The experiment was performed on the high-resolution chopper spectrometer at the Intense Pulsed Neutron Source (IPNS) of the Argonne National Laboratory. Scattering functions in the angular range from 4° to 20° were converted, after analytical corrections, into density of states of the system in the stretching frequency region. Analysis of these results leads to the following conclusions: (i) the number of modes in the stretching region of ice Ih is 8.1/cell which is that expected in the case of free molecules; (ii) the general shape of the density of states is in qualitative agreement with Raman scattering results, however the high energy side of the neutron data suggests that a non-Raman active band exists at about 3500 cm−1; (iii) the overall bandwidth observed in this experiment is in good agreement with what we estimated by a coherent inelastic neutron scattering study on heavy ice Ih.

    Notes: Inelastic neutron scattering experiments were performed at intermediate and high momentum transfer, up to 88.2 Å−1, to study the temperature dependence of single hydrogen mean kinetic energy in polycrystalline and liquid hydrogen sulphide (H2S), in the temperature range 16–206 K. Values of the hydrogen mean kinetic energy were extracted, within the impulse approximation, by fitting to the high momentum transfer data a model response function, obtained from a momentum distribution which is the orientational average of a multivariate Gaussian function. The extracted kinetic energies are compared with a harmonic model for the vibrational and roto-translational dynamics. The model makes use of the hydrogen-projected density of states worked out from intermediate momentum transfer data, as well as of optical frequencies determined from Raman and infrared (IR) spectroscopy. A fairly good agreement is obtained in the whole temperature range, while noticeably lower values for the kinetic energy are found if a single atom momentum distribution of isotropic Gaussian shape is assumed in the model response function. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Neutron diffraction measurements on liquid ammonia at two temperature states on the liquid-vapor coexistence curve are presented. Three isotropic mixtures of hydrogenated and deuterated ammonia have been studied and the three radial atom–atom distribution functions extracted at 213 K and 273 K. The comparison of the experimental results with the partial radial distribution functions for orientationally uncorrelated molecules, shows some evidence for hydrogen bonding in liquid ammonia but this is much less pronounced than that found in water under ambient conditions. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Neutron diffraction data, obtained by employing the hydrogen isotope substitution technique, on orthobaric hydrogen chloride at two state points are presented. The site-site radial distribution functions are derived from these data and are compared with similar results obtained previously for hydrogen iodide and hydrogen bromide. Comparison of the measured hydrogen-hydrogen and chlorine-hydrogen radial distribution functions with those derived assuming uncorrelated orientations demonstrates the presence of strong orientational correlations between first neighboring HCl molecules at both states. An analysis of molecular configurations compatible with the experimental data as generated by a Monte Carlo simulation routine is used to discuss the extent of hydrogen bonding in liquid HCl. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Acquired haemophilia is a rare but life-threatening bleeding disease that can be observed in males or females at various ages. In the present study, we report on five cases of acquired factor (F) VIII inhibitors diagnosed in the elderly population over a period of 5 years between 1995 and 1999 in our hospital. The median age of the patients at the time of diagnosis was 76.2 years (66–92 years). In all cases, the diagnosis was suggested by mild to severe bleeding with no previous bleeding history. While the absence of associated conditions is frequently reported especially among the elderly, in our series an underlying disease was found in four out of the five cases: kidney tumour (two cases) and autoimmune disease (two cases). The bleeding was controlled in four patients using porcine FVIII (two cases) or recombinant FVIIa (two cases). The inhibitors were completely resolved in two patients (kidney tumour, GoodPasture syndrome) by treatment of the underlying disease. However, three patients died as direct or indirect consequence of having an inhibitor. Our series confirms and extends previous data reporting the complexity and severity of this disorder. Because bleeding is often severe, a prompt and correct diagnosis is required to provide adequate therapeutic options that take the advanced age of the patients into account.
