    Notes: Summary. The numerical solution of a convection-diffusion-reaction model problem is considered in two and three dimensions. A stabilized finite element method of Galerkin/Least-square type accomodates diffusion-dominated as well as convection- and/or reaction-dominated situations. The resolution of boundary layers occuring in the singularly perturbed case is achieved using anisotropic mesh refinement in boundary layer regions. In this paper, the standard analysis of the stabilized Galerkin method on isotropic meshes is extended to more general meshes with boundary layer refinement. Simplicial Lagrangian elements of arbitrary order are used.

    Notes: This paper is concerned with a specific finite element strategy for solving elliptic boundary value problems in domains with corners and edges. First, the anisotropic singular behaviour of the solution is described. Then the finite element method with anisotropic, graded meshes and piecewise linear shape functions is investigated for such problems; the schemes exhibit optimal convergence rates with decreasing mesh size. For the proof, new local interpolation error estimates for functions from anisotropically weighted spaces are derived. Finally, a numerical experiment is described, that shows a good agreement of the calculated approximation orders with the theoretically predicted ones. © 1998 B. G.     Notes: This paper is concerned with the effective numerical treatment of elliptic boundary value problems when the solutions contain singularities. The paper deals first with the theory of problems of this type in the context of weighted Sobolev spaces and covers problems in domains with conical vertices and non-intersecting edges, as well as polyhedral domains with Lipschitz boundaries. Finite element schemes on graded meshes for second-order problems in polygonal/polyhedral domains are then proposed for problems with the above singularities. These schemes exhibit optimal convergence rates with decreasing mesh size. Finally, we describe numerical experiments which demonstrate the efficiency of our technique in terms of ‘actual’ errors for specific (finite) mesh sizes in addition to the asymptotic rates of convergence.
