    Notes: Abstract The generator coordinate method is used to relate the interacting boson model of Arima and lachello and the collective model of Bohr and Mottelson through an isometric transformation. It associates complex parameters to the original boson operators whereas the ultimate collective variables are real. The absolute squares of the collective wave functions can be given a direct probability interpretation. The lowest order Bohr-Mottelson hamiltonian is obtained in the harmonic approximation to the interacting boson model; unharmonic coupling terms render the collective potential to be velocity dependent. The mapping of operators of the interacting boson model onto those of the Bohr-Mottelson model turns out to be of Holstein-Primakoff type.

    Notes: Abstract The two presently available measurements of the low-energy3H(α, γ)7Li reaction differ from each other by roughly 30% in total magnitude as well as in their determination of the branching ratios for the transition into the two final7Li bound states. Studying the3H(α, γ)7Li reaction in the framework of the microscopic Resonating Group Method we were able to reproduce both experimental total cross sections using different effective nucleon-nucleon interactions. However, none of the effective forces yields branching ratios compatible with the data measured by the Toronto-Münster-collaboration.

    Notes: Abstract α-14C cluster configurations of the18O system have been studied in a microscopically founded model, treating antisymmetrization between the clusters exactly. A rotational band with little parity splitting and strong intrabandE1-transitions has been found, supporting Iachello's notion of the molecular-dipole degree of freedom in nuclei. Deviations from a pure molecular rotator picture are understood in terms of shell model contaminations, using the analysis of the18O spectrum by Fortune et al.

    Notes: Abstract We have recalculated the fusion rates of the free deuterium molecule, ion and mesomolecule taking into account the shielding of the Coulomb barrier by the electrons and muon. Electron screening increases the rates by several orders of magnitude. The fusion of hydrogen nuclei is known to be the source of energy of stars occuring in their high-temperature, high-pressure interiors. In terrestrial conditions, one attempts currently to tap this source of nuclear fusion energy by alternative techniques, i.e. high-temperature plasmas or muon-catalyzed fusion. Very recently cold fusion in solids has achieved worldwide attention, since experimental evidence for increased hydrogenic fusion rates in palladium and titanium has been reported[1,2]. These reports have motivated us to reconsider the fusion probability of free hydrogen molecules, ions and mesomolecules, following closely the studies of Refs. [3,4,5]. Our aim however is to improve the previous estimates of the respective fusion rates by taking account of the screening effects of the electrons and muons on the nuclear Coulomb barrier which will turn out to be quite important. As in Ref. [5] we will restrict our numerical results to deuterium only.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of electron screening on the low-energy cross sections of nuclear fusion reactions of astrophysical interest have been studied within the Born-Oppenheimer approximation using a simplified model. These studies indicate that a significant enhancement of the cross sections can occur already at beam energies, which are about a factor 100 higher than the electron binding energies. Cross sections near such energies can now be measured, in some cases, and several examples are discussed. For an understanding of the low-energy data as well as for a reliable extrapolation of the cross sections (for bare nuclei) to lower energies, the effects of electron screening must be well understood.
