Notes: Abstract Reaction mechanisms populating the exit channels of the system7Li+51V were studied at a beam energy of 18 MeV. Final nuclei were detected by their characteristicγ-rays. Theseγ-rays in coincidence with light charged particles were used to identify the reaction channels. Also forward-backward asymmetries of the coincident events gave a measure of the contribution of direct and compound reaction mechanisms. It was found that the dominant mechanism feeding channels with charged particles in the final state is direct transfer of a triton orα particle.

Notes: Abstract The model of radiocaesium transfer to sheep presented by Galer et al. [1] provides reliable predictions only for sheep of a similar body weight to those used in the development of the model (approximately 30 kg). To extend the applicability of the model, it was necessary to re-parameterise it in terms of activity concentrations in tissues rather than total activities within them (although for gut compartments the use of activity has been retained). The rate coefficients for the new model have been estimated by fitting the model to the data used by Galer et al. [1] which was derived from a single “calibration” experiment. The new model was found to account for 94% of the observed variation in the data (n=42), a result similar to that obtained by Galer et al. [1]. The model has also been tested against data not used in its development but obtained from four separate experiments undertaken by three different laboratories. Good agreement between the predictions of the new model and observations was found for most circumstances and for several breeds of sheep with different body weights. It is concluded that the new model provides a useful dynamic description of radiocaesium transfers to the tissues of sheep of different breeds and under different contamination scenarios.

Notes: Abstract The cross section of the11B(n, α)8Li reaction has been measured atE n=7.6 to 12.6 MeV. The neutron beam was produced via theD(d, n)3He reaction and aBF 3 counter (with naturalB isotopic composition) served both as target for the11B nuclides and as detector for the observation of the delayedα-activity of8Li. The data match well with previous results obtained atE n =12.5 to 20.0 MeV. Using the principle of detailed balance the data were converted to the case of the8Li(α, n 0)11B reaction. The associated astrophysicalS(E) factor is dominated by a resonance atE R=0.58 MeV of widthΓ R =200 keV, withS(E R )=8400 MeV b. ThisS (E R ) value for the n0 channel alone is already three times higher than the constantS(E) factor assumed previously and, thus, strengthens the significance of inhomogeneous Big Bang nucleosynthesis.

Notes: Abstract The selective uptake of strontium by a specially tailored aluminum pillared montmorillonite was investigated. Selective exchange kinetics revealed a fast component of the order of less than one hour, while exchange isotherms revealed the preference for strontium uptake over sodium and calcium with separation factors α Na Sr =50 and α Ca Sr =2. In an environment of rumen liquid taken from slaughtered sheep, 26% of strontium was removed by 1 g and 40% by 3 g of material.

Notes: Abstract The methods of PIGE and XRF were used to determine the elemental composition and the structural formulae of a specially tailored PILC material during the steps of its preparation. The CEC, a crucial property for the characterization of a cation exchanger, was monitored through all stages of preparation. In addition, the charge carried by the pillars, a critical quantity of the pillaring process, was estimated. Exchange isotherms of strontium and cesium were performed through the use of radiotracers' exchange isotherms of137Cs and85Sr with typical ψ-ray spectroscopy. These isotherms were of the Langmuir type and PILCs adsorption capacity was determined. The latter property was compared with the CEC determined by the elemental analysis and was found equal to the amount of the exchangeable interlamellar sodium ions.

Notes: Abstract X-ray spectra produced by Pt and Os bombardment of Fe targets have been measured in the projectile energy range ofE p =17 to 30 MeV. The thick target yields of the Fe K-shell and Pt and Os M-shells were analyzed within the Landau-Zener model. M-vacancy fractions, their respective lifetimes, and the level-crossing radii for the Pt−Fe and Os−Fe encounters were deduced. The results are discussed with emphasis on the mechanism of transient magnetic fields.
