Notes: Abstract Least trimmed squares (LTS) provides a parametric family of high breakdown estimators in regression with better asymptotic properties than least median of squares (LMS) estimators. We adapt the forward search algorithm of Atkinson (1994) to LTS and provide methods for determining the amount of data to be trimmed. We examine the efficiency of different trimming proportions by simulation and demonstrate the increasing efficiency of parameter estimation as larger proportions of data are fitted using the LTS criterion. Some standard data examples are analysed. One shows that LTS provides more stable solutions than LMS.

Notes: Abstract Detection of multiple outliers in multivariate data using Mahalanobis distances requires robust estimates of the means and covariance of the data. We obtain this by sequential construction of an outlier free subset of the data, starting from a small random subset. The stalactite plot provides a cogent summary of suspected outliers as the subset size increases. The dependence on subset size can be virtually removed by a simulation-based normalization. Combined with probability plots and resampling procedures, the stalactite plot, particularly in its normalized form, leads to identification of multivariate outliers, even in the presence of appreciable masking.

Notes: Abstract The properties of a parameterized form of generalized simulated annealing for function minimization are investigated by studying the properties of repeated minimizations from random starting points. This leads to the comparison of distributions of function values and of numbers of function evaluations. Parameter values which yield searches repeatedly terminating close to the global minimum may require unacceptably many function evaluations. If computational resources are a constraint, the total number of function evaluations may be limited. A sensible strategy is then to restart at a random point any search which terminates, until the total allowable number of function evaluations has been exhausted. The response is now the minimum of the function values obtained. This strategy yields a surprisingly stable solution for the parameter values of the simulated annealing algorithm. The algorithm can be further improved by segmentation in which each search is limited to a maximum number of evaluations, perhaps no more than a fifth of the total available. The main tool for interpreting the distributions of function values is the boxplot. The application is to the optimum design of experiments.
