Notes: Based upon the work of Cooper & Nathans, an expression for the normalized resolution function of a triple-axis neutron spectrometer is derived and tested experimentally. The formalism is extended to show the explicit dependence of the integrated intensity of a sharp excitation spectrum on all of the relevant instrumental parameters. Extensive measurements of the integrated intensities of phonons in copper have been carried out for a wide range of all adjustable parameters. The experimentally determined intensities are found to be in good agreement with the calculated values.

Notes: Relative displacements of the atoms corresponding to the lowest frequency long wavelength transverse optic phonon of several materials with the perovskite structure were determined directly by a least-squares refinement of the integrated intensity of inelastic neutron scattering. The modes of KTaO3 and SrTiO3 were identified as being of the Slater type, in which oxygen atoms vibrate against Ta and Ti atoms. In the case of RbMnF3, however, an entirely different vibrational motion was obtained, in which Rb ions vibrate out of phase with the rigid MnF3 group.

Notes: Polarized neutron scattering techniques have been used to study the spatial distribution and temperature dependence of the magnetization induced in a single crystal sample of CeCu2Si2 by a magnetic field of 50 kOe. We find that at 4.2 K (〉Tc), the induced magnetization is predominantly of 4f electronic character. No evidence was found of any change in the magnetic form factor between 300 and 4.2 K.

Notes: A diffraction study of multiple bilayers consisting of thin films of Fe and Ge was performed using both x rays and polarized neutrons. A reduction in the moment of a fraction of the Fe atoms due primarily to interdiffusion at the interface is indicated.

Notes: Gadolinium hexaboride is thought to have at least two magnetic phases in zero magnetic field. The structure of these phases, however, is still unknown. Due to the high neutron absorption of both Gd and B, studies by neutron scattering are not easy to do. We therefore used the alternative technique of x-ray magnetic scattering. Experiments were performed with a rotating anode x-ray source and CuKα radiation at temperatures down to 6 K. At the lowest temperatures two sets of superlattice reflections of the form (h/2,k,l) and/or (h,k/2,l) and (h/2,k/2,l) were observed. The intensity of both types of reflection remains roughly constant until 10 K. At this temperature the intensities of the (h/2,k,l) and (h,k/2,l) reflections increase sharply and reach a maximum around 11.5 K, while the (h/2,k/2,l) reflections rapidly disappear. At 12 K, only the former reflections are observed and they disappear discontinuously at TN =15.85±0.5 K. The results confirm the existence of two magnetic phase transitions in GdB6 and suggest a complex multi-q magnetic structure.

Notes: A photographic Weissenberg camera has been constructed which can be mounted on the 2θ arm of a four-circle diffractometer. At a distance of 0.5 m from the sample the 2θ resolution for a 100 μm crystal is 0.2 mrad (0.01°), allowing a high-resolution mapping of reciprocal space at a synchrotron source in an efficient way. As sample experimental results, a study is presented of the streak system around the 111 reflection of a perfect germanium crystal and the detection of a minute phase transformation in a single-powder grain of a high-Tc superconductor.

Notes: Abstract Subtle but well characterized structural phase transformations occur at low temperatures in some lanthanum cuprate superconductors. These transformations, which involve collective tilting of the CuO6 octahedra, have a strong influence on superconducting and normal state properties. Experiments suggest that for a given hole doping the following hierarchy exists for superconductivity in these materials: Tc(HTT)〉Tc(LTO)〉Tc(LTT), where HTT represents the untilted structure and LTO and LTT are the two limiting low temperature tilted structures. An additional very strong suppression of Tc, suggestive of a competing electronic groundstate, occurs in the LTT phase for a hole to Cu ratio of 1/8. Neither of these effects are understood at present. This paper reviews both the evidence upon which these conclusions are based and some outstanding unanswered questions.
