    Notes: Abstract New methods are suggested for the determination of the charge density of acrylamide/acrylate copolymers.13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy was used to determine the comonomer ratio by comparing the peak intensities of the methine carbon in acrylamide and acrylate monomers. Results were compared with those obtained by conductometric and potentiometric titration and were found to be in good agreement. Differential scanning calorimetry was employed to determine the glass transition temperatures (T g) of the copolymers. A master curve was established by plottingT g versus charge density of the copolymers previously determined by NMR and conductometric titration. Compositions of poly(acrylamide-co-acrylate) samples can thus be determined by measuring theT g and reading the percent composition directly from the master curve.

    Notes: Abstract Organic matter in the soil profile under a young Douglas-fir stand in coastal British Columbia was characterized by examining intact samples of fresh litterfall and organic horizons (LF, H), and fractions (floatables, humic acid [HA], fulvic acid [FA], humin [HU]) from the three mineral horizons (Ae, Bm, BC). Some 30–40% of the carbon in the mineral horizons was found in poorly-decomposed plant material floatable in water, a fraction whose characteristics changed little with depth, and which contained over 1% Fe. The proportion of soil C in HA plus FA was approximately 8%, but the ratio of C in FA/HA increased with depth. Solid-state 13C NMR spectra of litterfall, LH and H samples showed effects of decomposition, in particular a decrease in 0-alkyl C from litterfall to LH to H, and degradation of resolution from LF to H. For the mineral soil fractions, both floatables and de-ashed HU (‘HUd’ prepared by HCl/HF treatment) indicated high levels of the original plant biopolymers, including a large alkyl component. Solution 13C spectra of the HAs from mineral horizons showed little difference with depth, except that peaks due to lignin were more pronounced for the Bm HA. The NMR spectra of FAs were high in 0-alkyl and carboxyl C. Pyrolysis-field ionization mass spectrometry confirmed and extended the results from NMR and chemical analyses, in particular demonstrating the accumulation of suberin in some fractions and the leaching and decomposition of lignin components with increasing depth in the mineral horizons. The general features of the HA, FA and HUd from this forest soil, and the effects of decomposition and pedogenesis were similar to those widely found for agricultural and forest soils. However, the accumulation of suberin, and the leaching and decomposition of lignin are particularly associated with forest soils. The low proportion of soil C in HA and FA, and the high proportion in poorly decomposed, iron-rich plant fragments suggest that decomposition is somewhat limited at this site, which is classified as having low fertility. The high accumulations of alkyl C from suberin may also indicate, or contribute to inhibition of decomposition.

    Notes: Proton and 13C NMR has been used to examine a series of organotin derivatives. Anisochronous shifts are reported for chiral derivatives of tin, and 1H and 13C spin coupling constants to 117Sn and 119Sn are discussed. Spin lattice relaxation of 13C in these derivatives has been measured, and is used to indicate the effects of steric crowding on the ligands in terms of their freedom to undergo conformational rerrangements.

    Notes: There are several reports in the literature to the effect that when isotactic polystyrene crystallizes from moderately dilute solution, lamellas (precipitate) form at high crystallization temperatures and gels at low temperatures. We report here the occurrence of a very similar phenomenon during the crystallization of ethylene-butene-1 copolymers. The observations for the latter system can be given a straightforward explanation based on the demonstrated compositional fractionation that occurs on crystallization. Low co-unit content copolymers are associated with lamellas. Gels invariably contain much higher co-unit content. A generalization of these findings is invoked to explain the previous polystyrene results. A new resonance detected by 13C NMR experiments in this polymer can be ascribed to head-head sequences.

    Notes: Carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation parameters have been obtained as a function of temperature for a set of branched polyethylenes whose β transition temperatures were determined independently. Resolvable spectra could be obtained at temperatures either corresponding to or very close to the temperature of the β transition. Together with results for other systems, these observations preclude the indentification of the β transition with the glass temperature. From the measured spin relaxation times and nuclear Overhauser enhancements average correlation times were calculated as a function of temperature. The average correlation times were calculated as a function of temperature. The average correlation time is on the order of 10-8-10-9 s at the β transition. These results argue strongly against it being assigned to the glass temperature.
