Notizen: The primary reaction of oxygen with irradiated polyethylene has been followed by observing the rapid disappearance of the ultraviolet absorption bands at 258 and 285 mμ, bands attributed to the allyl and dienyl free radicals. A mathematical theory based on diffusion equations has been developed by means of which a quantitative estimate of the total initial free-radical concentration can be made. From the shape of the free-radical decay curve it can be concluded that the initial oxygen-free-radical reactions occur about three times as frequently in the amorphous regions as in the crystalline.

Notizen: It has been found that appreciable carbon black flocculation can occur in filled rubber stocks during storage or vulcanization in the absence of shear. The kinetics of this flocculation process were studied by means of low strain dynamic mechanical property and electrical conducitvity measurements. The results showed the rate of flocculation to be governed by the type and concentration of carbon black, polymer macrostructure, mixing history, and annealing temperature. A mechanism responsible for the formation of this carbon black network structre was proposed and the resulting changes in the physical properties of vulcanizates prepared from these rubber compounds were elucidated. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: The luminescence of 1,2-polybutadiene was measured during and following irradiation with 1.4-MeV electrons at 90 °K. Measured under isothermal conditions, the light intensity at first increases sharply on start-up of irradiation, and then reaches a plateau after several seconds. The equilibrium value was found to be linearly dependent on the dose rate employed. The postirradiation luminescence decay measured at 90°K follows second-order kinetics. The light emitted by the irradiated sample during warm-up to room temperature is characterized by the appearance of four intensity maxima at 118, 168, 223, and 261 °K. The first three peaks are attributable to the onset of local motion, whereas the peak at 223 °K is caused by the long-range motion occurring at the glass-to-rubber transition. A preirradiation of the polymer in vacuo causes an increase in these four peaks as well as the formation of a new maximum at 143 °K.Intermittent exposure of the irradiated sample to light of wavelengths λ 〉 450 nm causes the isothermal luminescence decay to be interrupted by a burst of light emitted by the sample during and shortly following the light exposure. This treatment also results in considerably reduced intensity maxima during warm-up to room temperature. An interpretation of the findings reported is given on the basis of reactions involving primary and secondary transient species produced during irradiation and on the molecular parameters of the polybutadiene.

Notizen: The chemical and physical crosslink densities of irradiated polybutadiene were determined using a precise and consistent method. This method included the use of a statistical theory of crosslinking modified to include chain reactions and the use of Langley's theory for calculating the number of trapped chain entanglements. The number of crosslinks formed per unit radiation dose, G(X), was measured for a series of polybutadienes containing various isomeric forms of unsaturation. The physical crosslink density and the molecular weight between entanglements were determined from measurements of the compression modulus of swollen samples.
