    Notes: Abstract Quantum dynamics is normally used to describe the causal evolution of the quantum state of a physical system between initial acts ofpreparation and finalmeasurement operations. But logical consistency and completeness require that the same dynamical principles be applicable to the physical description of the preparation and measurement processes themselves. There is an extensive literature of contributions to the quantum theory of measurement, but very little theoretical scrutiny has been given to the process of state preparation. This paper begins with a philosophical analysis of the concept of preparation in quantum physics, then develops a classification of preparation schemes intoselective andcoercive types. An exact mathematical model illustrating coercive preparation is presented in detail.

    Can information be transferred faster than light? II. The relativistic Doppler effect on electromagnetic wave packets with suboptic and superoptic group velocities (1988)

    Notes: Abstract It is shown that (a) both the dispersion relations between the mean frequency θ0 and the mean wave number k 0 are invariant under the Lorentz transformation; and (b) the relativistic Doppler effects on θ 0 and k 0 differ. In the suboptic packet there is anomalous red shift in the mean wave number k' 0 received from a source receding with speed v: k′ 0 changes sign through zero as v goes through the value vg, the mean group velocity in the packet. In the superoptic packet the anomalous red shift is in the mean frequency θ′ 0 which reverses sign through zero as v goes through the value vp, the mean phase velocity in the packet. This last finding indicates a blackout of the superoptic signal when propagated toward a receiver moving away from the source at a speed greater than vp. There is no violation of causality involved, and the final conclusion of the paper is that it is not a fundamental axiom of “special relativity,” as usually believed, to deny that information can be transmitted at speeds greater than c.

    Notes: Abstract Part I of the present work outlined the rigorous application of information theory to a quantum mechanical system in a thermodynamic equilibrium state. The general formula developed there for the best-guess density operator $$\hat \rho$$ was indeterminate because it involved in an essential way an unspecified prior probability distribution over the continuumD H of strong equilibrium density operators. In Part II mathematical evaluation of $$\hat \rho$$ is completed after an epistemological analysis which leads first to the discretization ofD H and then to the adoption of a suitable indifference axiom to delimit the set of admissible prior distributions. Finally, quantal formulas for information-theoretic and thermodynamic entropies are contrasted, and the entire work is summarized.
