Notes: Background: Delay of atrial electrical conduction measured as prolonged signal-averaged P wave duration (SAPWD) could be due to atrial enlargement. Here, we aimed to compare different atrial size parameters obtained from echocardiography with the SAPWD measured with a signal-averaged electrocardiogram (SAECG). Methods: In 74 patients scheduled for elective echocardiography, an SAECG was recorded directly after the echocardiogram. We measured the SAPWD and registered clinical characteristics. The correlation between the SAPWD and the left atrial diameter (LAD), left atrial volume (LAV), right atrial volume (RAV), and total atrial volume (TAV) was analyzed by linear regression analyses. The effect of concomitant risk factors on TAV and the SAPWD was examined. Results: Linear regression analysis showed that the correlation between the SAPWD and the LAD was significant (R2= 0.11, P = 0.03). However, LAV (R2= 0.15, P = 0.009), RAV (R2= 0.27, P = 0.0003), and TAV (R2= 0.37, P 〈 0.0001) were more strongly correlated to the SAPWD. The TAV and the SAPWD were not significantly associated with coexisting risk factors. Conclusions: The SAPWD is significantly correlated to the atrial size; most strongly to the TAV. The size of the right atrium, with the sinus node area, appears to affect the SAPWD.

Notes: Sodium/potassium (Na/K) ratios are considered to be a marker of mammary epithelial paracellular permeability. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between maternal atopy and Na/K ratios in breast milk and the association between Na/K ratios in breast milk and the development of atopy in the offspring. Early and mature milk samples were obtained from 30 atopic and 43 non-atopic women. We found no differences in the Na/K ratios between atopic and non-atopic women. At 18 months of age, 22 (30%) of the children had a positive skin prick test (SPT) and 26 (36%) had symptoms of atopic diseases. Overall, high levels of Na/K compared with low and slightly raised levels of Na/K in the maternal milk tended to be associated with a positive SPT and atopic disease. However, if the mother was atopic, high levels of Na/K in early or mature milk were associated with a significantly increased risk of a positive SPT or atopic disease in the offspring [RR = 4.8 (1.9–12)] whereas no such association was observed in non-atopic mothers [RR = 0.8 (0.4–1.7), p for interaction = 0.001]. Thus, high Na/K levels in the breast milk may be associated with the development of atopy and atopic diseases in the offspring of atopic mothers.

Notes: Summary From February 1984 to February 1987, 29 patients with advanced, hormone-resistant prostatic carcinoma were treated with mitomycin-C at a dose of 20 mg/m2 every 6 weeks (15 mg/m2 in patients 〉75 years old and in those who had undergone previous radiotherapy). In the 27 evaluable patients, there were no complete remissions (CR), 2 partial remissions (PR), 14 stabilizations (STAB), and 11 cases of progressive disease (PRO). Ten stabilized patients showed significant pain reduction. Toxicity was minimal. The actuarial median survival was 10.8 months. In this study, mitomycin C was not active in terms of CR+PR; however, a beneficial symptomatic effect was frequently observed.

Notes: Summary Estrogen (ER) and progesterone receptor (PgR) analyses have been performed in 884 primary, malignant human breast tumor biopsies. Receptor contents were evaluated with respect to age and menopausal status. The frequency of ER + tumors was found to be significantly higher in postmenopausal than in pre/perimenopausal women. Age rather than menopausal status was found to be associated with this difference. The significant association with age was found in the post- but not the pre/perimenopausal women. The frequency of PgR + tumors was found to be significantly lower in the postmenopausal than in the pre/perimenopausal women. Neither age nor menopausal status alone could account for this difference, which appears to be due to a compound effect of the two factors. The distribution of receptor profile patterns is described according to menopausal status. The patterns differ significantly in pre- and postmenopausal women. PgR dominates in the premenopausal tumor while ER dominates in the postmenopausal tumor. This difference is apparent within the subgroup of ER + PgR + patients as well. The current tenets for prediction of recurrent disease utilizing steroid hormone receptor determinations are discussed for the group of ER + PgR + patients.

Notes: Summary During the pollen season, a daily account of airborne pollen is reported by radio and newpapers in Denmark as «Today's pollen count». The Aerobiological Group under the Danish Asthma and Allergy association is responsible for the daily identification and counting of pollen. In 1984 the Group set up a trial to investigate the reproducibility of the pollen count. Three trained pollen counters independently examined the same specimens from two Burkard pollen traps. The traps were located on the roof of the Meterological Institute in Copenhagen 15 meters above ground level in the northern outskirts of central Copenhagen. This is the usual sampling site. Specimens from each trap from 20 days during the grass pollen season were selected. Four species groups were identified in sufficient numbers for statistical analysis. These were, in order of occurrence, spruce/pine (Picea/Pinus), grass (Poaceae), nettle (Urtica) and mugwort (Artemisia). Identification of sources of variation and assessment of their relative importance were carried out using variance components models. A detailed account of the method is given. Qualitatively equivalent conclusions were reached for each group: i) The expected seasonal variation was identified; ii) The counters contributed significantly to the variation of pollen counts; iii) The traps did not contribute to the variance, but a day-trap interaction was identified. This interaction was interpreted. as a problem of instrumental variation over time of traps of variation in meteorological conditions; iv) The total variance was larger than originally expected. The relative uncertainty was greater than 50 per cent. The variance of the daily pollen count cannot be reduced much by reducing counter variation or day-trap interaction. The variation among pollen counters is small, and the day-trap interaction is difficult to fully comprehend. The basic measurement error can be reduced by examining a larger area of each specimen. Although this implies a greater cost, it is probably the most effective method of reducing the uncertainty of «Today's pollen count».

Notes: The surface compositions of three different back-side metals: Ti/Ni/Au 0.1/0.4/0.1 μm, Ti/Ni/Ag 0.1/0.4/0.1 and 0.1/0.4/2 μm and Ti/Ni 0.1/04 μm after thermal treatment at 180°C in air were investigated by means of XPS technique. In the Ti/Ni/Au metal the Ni diffusion through the Au layer was observed, while in the Ti/Ni/Ag metal Ni was not found on the silver surface. Ti/Ni/Ag was found to be sensitive to contamination from elements such as sulphur and chlorine found on the silver surface after thermal treatment, while Ti/Ni metal is sensitive to oxidation. NiO, Ni(OH)2, NiOOH and Ni2O3 species were found on the Ni as deposited surface. The surface compositions were correlated to their wetting property using the Pb88—Sn10—Ag2 and Pb95.5—Sn2—Ag2.5 wt.% soft solder alloys. The wetting was studied measuring the contact angle between the surface and the drop of molten solders.
