Notes: Modified atmosphere (MA) storage in conjunction with refrigeration has been shown to significantly increase the shelf life of fresh fish and other products, but the effects, if any on the outgrowth and toxigenesis of C. botulinum are unknown. A commercial system was duplicated in the laboratory and the effects of modified atmosphere on the outgrowth of C. botulinum types A, B, and E were observed in inoculated salmon fillets and sandwiches stored at 4.4°C and 22.2°C. Inoculated samples stored in air at the same temperatures were used as controls. No toxigensis was observed in either the air or modified samples stored at 4.4°C, but all inoculated samples held at 22.2°C were toxic within 2–3 days. Spoilage generally preceded toxigenesis. In a concurrent study, the tendency of CO2 environments to repress the growth of gram negative bacteria to a greater extent than gram positive bacteria was also noted.

Notes: The photochemistry of carbonyl sulfide (OCS) adsorbed to small silver clusters is shown to exhibit a striking odd–even dependence on the number of Ag atoms in the cluster. OCS is found to desorb nondissociatively from even numbered silver clusters. In contrast, on odd silver clusters, a new product channel corresponding to AgnS is observed. Parallels are found with the photochemistry of adsorbates on extended surfaces. Cross-section measurements for OCS desorption from Ag10 and wavelength-dependent measurements of OCS dissociation on Ag9 both indicate that electronic excitation of the cluster initiates chemistry, analogous to substrate mediated surface photochemistry. The size dependence is reasonably explained in terms of a charge-transfer mechanism involving an ion-pair state of the AgnOCS complex. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The naphthalene moiety of the title compound, C12H11Br, is planar within 0.052 (4) Å. The Br, C11 and C12 atoms deviate by −0.1711 (5), 0.065 (5) and 0.182 (4) Å, respectively, from this plane. The C—Br distance is 1.911 (3) Å.

Notes: Abstract Myocytes from failing human ventricle contract and relax more slowly than those from non-failing. This has been suggested to result from the lowering of basal cyclic AMP level in failing myocardium, and the consequent withdrawal of a tonic lusitropic effect. We present data to support this hupothesis by demonstrating that the acceleration of contraction and relaxation by β-adrenoceptor stimulation is greater in myocytes from failing than nonfailing heart. This is despite the desensitisation of the inotropic effect of isorenaline in the same failing cells. Following β-adrenoceptor stimulation, speeds of contraction and relaxation are normalised in myocytes from failing heart, with final values not significantly different from non-failing.

Notes: Summary A joint-study of a granitic batholith recorded orientations and spacings of joint-sets at outcrop and at three separate sections of a water diversion tunnel. A second joint-survey in the tunnel determined the average joint spacing along the spring lines. Joint-set spacing studies show a 40–50% reduction of joint-set spacing underground, compared to those at the surface. Individual equal-area plots of surface joints for the two major facies of the granitic rock showed different maxima. But when the joints in the two facies were combined into one equal-area plot, the predominent facies, which represented 73% of the joints plotted, masked the prominent sets of the second facies. Hence, joint surveys for individual rock facies are warranted. Comparison of equal-area plots of surface and tunnel joints in the same rock facies reveals a striking similarity in joint-set maxima.
