Notes: Abstract When the needs of research and production are analyzed, the normal requirement is for some characterising experiment which will indicate the constancy (or otherwise) of fluid properties. Valid description of such parameters obtained in an “ad hoc” manner may be acceptable if in principle they may be given subsequently a more fundamental interpretation. It is suggested that certain geometries are particularly suitable for such measurements without much elaboration. In particular some studies with rotating and oscillating spheres, cylinders and cylindrical containers are reported. As one example of the data that can be obtained, a computer programme for the interpretation of results from damped oscillations of cylinders in an infinite fluid in terms of a previously published theory is made available.
