Notes: Abstract. The effect of cadmium on growth of Cd-tolerant and -sensitive plants of Silene vulgaris and on the production of metal-binding compounds in both types of plants was studied. The Cd-content of the roots and the Cd-root/shoot ratio was higher in Cd-tolerant plants. A Cd-binding compound (Cd-BC) with an apparent molecular mass of 14.5 kD was isolated from the roots of Cd-tolerant and -sensitive plants, grown in 40 mmol m−3 Cd for 21 d. More than 60% of the total Cd in the roots was associated with this compound. Determination of the amino-acid content of the purified Cd-containing compound from both types of plants showed that they possessed a similar amino-acid composition to that of phytochelatins. Only the bis- and tris-forms were present. The amount of Cd and sulphide associated with phytochelatin was greater in tolerant plants than in sensitive ones suggesting that an increased sulphide content of complexes containing peptide, sulphide and Cd may form the basis of evolved Cd-tolerance in Silence vulgaris.

Notes: Unstimulated whole saliva samples of 27 indoor epileptic patients were studied on their protein composition using biochemical and immunochemical methods. A number of salivary proteins appeared at least partially to be hydrolyzed. In a number of saliva samples the concentration of carbohydrate-containing isoenzymes of amylase was reduced. In addition, the concentration of the 20 kD glycoprotein EP-GP was reduced by 60%. Sialic acid, the terminal sugar of the glycoproteins and mucins, was released for about 50% and in three salivas even nearly completely. Moreover, sialic acid- and fucose-containing epitopes could hardly be detected by monoclonal antibodies to human salivary mucins. As a consequence of this hydrolytic breakdown the saliva mediated aggregation of two S. sanguis strains had been reduced. In contrast, the aggregation of S. oralis had been maintained.

Notes: Abstract Subroutine PLTMG is a Fortran program for solving self-adjoint elliptic boundary value problems in general regions ofR 2. It is based on a piecewise linear triangle finite element method, an adaptive grid refinement procedure, and a multi-level iterative method to solve the resulting sets of linear equations. In this work we describe the method and present some numerical results and comparisons.

Notes: Abstract The alternate-block-factorization (ABF) method is a procedure for partially decoupling systems of elliptic partial differential equations by means of a carefully chosen change of variables. By decoupling we mean that the ABF strategy attempts to reduce intra-equation coupling in the system rather than intra-grid coupling for a single elliptic equation in the system. This has the effect of speeding convergence of commonly used iteration schemes, which use the solution of a sequence of linear elliptic PDEs as their main computational step. Algebraically, the change of variables is equivalent to a postconditioning of the original system. The results of using ABF postconditioning on some problems arising from semiconductor device simulation are discussed.

Notes: Summary We derive a class of globally and quadratically converging algorithms for a system of nonlinear equations,g(u)=0, whereg is a sufficiently smooth homeomorphism. Particular attention is directed to key parameters which control the iteration. Several examples are given that have been successful in solving the coupled nonlinear PDEs which arise in semiconductor device modelling.

Notes: Summary Human pepsinogen A (PGA) displays highly polymorphic isozymogen patterns after polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and activity staining. The patterns differ with respect to the presence and the relative intensity of the individual fractions. Family studies strongly suggest that these isozymogen patterns are encoded by allelic haplotypes, encompassing different numbers and types of PGA genes. In this paper, we confirm the essential features of this multigene model. We establish the relationship between the haplotypes and the corresponding isozymogen patterns by determination of the PGA polymorphism at both the DNA and the protein level in 117 Dutch individuals, 60 of whom were unrelated. The combination of HindIII and EcoRI restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) has enabled us to define different haplotypes, which are shown to segregate within families. Most genes are characterized by their specific EcoRI fragments. The HindIII RFLP is in strong linkage disequilibrium with PGA genes showing strong expression of the relevant isozymogen. Although a general picture of the relationship between genotypes and phenotypes is emerging, there are exceptions, suggesting that rare haplotypes evolve by unique crossover events.

Notes: Summary In a sample of 160 Dutch twin pairs and their parents, we found that mothers of dizygotic twins had frequencies of the S and Z alleles at the protease inhibitor (Pi) locus that were 3 times higher than a control sample. Mothers of identical twins also had a higher frequency of S than controls. The S allele may thus both increase ovulation rate and enhance the success of multiple pregnancies. There was also an increased frequency of the S allele in fathers of dizygotic twins; however, this may be a secondary effect of assortative mating for family size (indicating by the number of siblings of the parents), for which a correlation of 0.2 was observed. Parents of dizygotic twins came from larger families than parents of monozygotic twins, but no effect of Pi type on family size was seen.
