Notes: Expression of proto-oncogene fos is induced in response to a variety of growth factors and differentiation-specific agents. However, the induction of fos gene expression is not influenced by inhibition of protein synthesis. We, therefore, entertained the notion that expression of the fos gene may be governed by posttranslational modification of cellular transcriptional factors. We report here that transcription of the human c-fos gene is modulated by negatively and positively acting cellular factors. The nuclear protein products of the resident oncogene of the FBJ-murine osteosar-coma virus (v-fos) and its corresponding cellular proto-oncogene (c-fos) are stoichiometrically phosphorylated on serine and threonine residues. The c-fos protein is more highly phosphorylated than the v-fos protein due to the phosphorylation of unique sites tentatively localized to the c-terminal 20 amino acid residues. The protein kinase C agonist, TPA, stimulates phosphorylation of the c-fos, but not the v-fos protein.

Notes: Abstract An integral representation is developed for the distribution of tangential traction during adhesive contact between obliquely loaded elastic spheres of similar materials. It is shown that adhesive conditions arise at the beginning of an impact between two spheres at low angles of incidence or after an initial period of gross slip for larger angles. A differential equation is developed and solved, describing this phase of the impact.

Notes: Abstract A general proof is given of the theorem that, if a continuous rigid punch indenting an elastic half space is heated, the separation of the solids will increase and part of the contact area will be lost. It is also shown that if the punch is convex, the contact area cannot be multiply-connected.

Notes: Abstract Certain problems in which a cooled rigid punch indents an elastic half-space have no steady state solution. A simple model is described in which it is shown that this paradox is avoided by the assumption of a thermal resistance varying inversely with contact pressure. A limiting case of this system retains linearity and introduces a state of “imperfect” contact in which contact pressure is negligible but there is significant thermal contact resistance. This approach is generalized to permit the formulation of three dimensional contact problems and one such problem is solved for an axisymmetric geometry. Particular results are given for the identation of a half-space by a cooled rigid sphere.

Notes: Abstract The paper investigates the perturbation in an otherwise uniform stress field in an elastic half-space due to a doubly-periodic array of small hemispherical holes at the free surface. The solution is obtained using three potential functions of double Fourier series form in Galerkin's strain potential solution, the coefficients of which are determined using the collocation method. The unperturbed field is taken to be one of uniform plane stress parallel to the free surface. Two special cases are studied—uniform tension and uniform shear stress. Numerical results for these cases can be generalized by superposition to give solutions for a general state of biaxial plane stress. It is found that, for both tension and shear, the maximum stress concentration occurs at the bottom of the holes. The stress concentration factor increases with the ratio of hole spacing to radius, approaching the known solution for a single hemispherical hole at large ratios.

Notes: Abstract Closed form expressions are developed for the thermoelastic curvature of the initially plane end faces of a traction free cylinder subjected to arbitrary axisymmetric heat flux, the curved surfaces being assumed insulated. The solution is developed from a potential function representation of displacement and temperature for an elastic layer. The reciprocal theorem is invoked to show that the tractions at the curved surface of the cylinder vary linearly along the axis and they are removed by superposition of biaxial bending. It is found that the curvature of the plane ends depends on the local heat flux and the mean heat flux, whilst the cylindrical face distorts into a cone.

Notes: Abstract Solutions to the Boussinesq problem for the circular punch without axial symmetry can be obtained from corresponding axisymmetric solutions by parametric differentiation. The method is applied to the problem of the tilted flat punch, originally solved by Green, and to the indentation of a cylindrical surface by a flat circular punch.

Notes: Abstract The classical formulation of the ‘homogeneous’ problem of a curved bar loaded only by and end force involves the assumption of an appropriate stress function with four arbitrary constants and the determination of these constants from the boundary conditions. Since there are five boundary conditions, four on the curved edge and one at the end, the solution is only possible because the coefficient matrix of the resulting algebraic equations is singular. This in turn means that certain inhomogeneous problems in which the curved edges are loaded by sinusoidally varying tractions cannot be solved using apparently appropriate stress functions. Additional stress functions which resolve this difficulty are introduced and an example problem is solved, which exhibits qualitatively different behavior from that in more general cases of loading. The problem is then reconsidered as a limiting case of sinusoidal loading of arbitrary wavelength. It is shown that the solution of the latter problem appears to become unbounded as the special case is approached, but that when the end conditions have been correctly satisfied by superposing an appropriate multiple of the end-loaded solution, the limit can be approached regularly and the correct special solution is recovered. The limiting process reveals a general procedure for determining the additional stress functions required for the special case. Similar relationships between homogeneous and inhomogeneous solutions for other common geometries are discussed.

Notes: Abstract A solution is obtained for the relationship between load, displacement and inner contact radius for an axisymmetric, spherically concave, rigid punch, indenting an elastic half-space. Analytic approximations are developed for the limiting cases in which the ratio of the inner and outer radii of the annular contact region is respectively small and close to unity. These approximations overlap well at intermediate values. The same method is applied to the conically concave punch and to a punch with a central hole.
