    Notes: Summary The effects of thymoxamine 0.5% solution and of a placebo solution (mannitol) on the mydriasis induced by ibopamine 1% solution were evaluated in 8 healthy volunteers and 12 patients with eye diseases. One drop of ibopamine was instilled into each eye and 30 min later 1 drop of thymoxamine was instilled into one eye and 1 drop of placebo into the contralateral eye. Pupillary diameter was measured before and 30 min after the instillation of ibopamine, immediately before the treatment with thymoxamine and placebo and 30, 60 and 90 min after the instillation of thymoxamine or of placebo. Within 30 min of treatment, ibopamine had produced a statistically and clinically significant mydriatic effect. In eyes treated with thymoxamine, prompt reversal of mydriasis was observed, the baseline diameter being observed within 60 min. No difference in the time-course of the mydriatic effect was detected between healthy subjects and patients. The pupillary response to thymoxamine was not influenced by the colour of the iris. The tolerability of ibopamine and of thymoxamine was good. No local or systemic adverse events were seen or reported.

    Notes: Abstract Objectives: The increased use of glycol ethers (GEs) for water-based paints and cleaning products, combined with a lack of information about many of these products, particularly with regard to the effects of percutaneous exposure, led us to evaluate the skin absorption rates of a group of glycol ethers in vitro. Methods: Skin permeation was calculated using the Franz cell method with human skin. A physiological solution was used as the receiving phase. The amount of solvent passing through the skin was analysed with a gas chromatographic technique employing flame ionization detection. A permeation profile was obtained and steady state, lag time and permeation constant flux was calculated for each of the following solvents: ethylene glycol monoethyl ether (EGMEE), propylene glycol mono-methyl ether (PGMME); propylene glycol mono-methyl ether acetate (PGMMEac); 2-propylene glycol 1-butyl ether (2PG1BE), ethylene glycol dimethyl ether (EGDME), ethylene glycol diethyl ether (EGDEE) and diethylene glycol dimethyl ether (DEGDME). All solvents were tested in their pure form and with 70% acetone. Results: For all solvents tested the lag time was less than 2 h, and for the majority of them was about 60 min. Flux at steady state ranged between 0.017 ± 0.005 and 3.435 ± 1.897 mg/cm2/h and permeation rate was from 0.0192 to 1.02 × 10−3 cm/h. The presence of acetone in the solution caused a reduction in lag time and an increase in permeation rate, higher for EGMEE, lower for EGDEE, indicating the enhancing effect of this mixture of solvents. Conclusions: Our results confirm the high percutaneous absorption of the GEs tested. The Franz method might be helpful for obtaining a grading of skin notation for hydrophilic substances: in the case of glycol ethers, it can give us precise information about permeation risk, particularly important in the evaluation of exposure. In the case of solvents with high dermal absorption, the air concentration is no longer a sufficient measure of the total exposure to workers, and therefore merely respecting threshold limit values (TLVs) in the air is not necessarily enough to protect them.

    Notes: Abstract During the formation ofHelianthus tuberosus tubers the activities of arginine decarboxylase (ADC) and S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase (SAMDC), examined in medullary parenchyma cells, increase with the increase in weight of the tuber. The ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity is about 100-fold less with respect to ADC activity, and it was detected only during the deceleration phase of the growth curve. Spermidine and spermine content are strictly related to the SAMDC activity and tuber growth. The increase of ADC and SAMDC activity is directly related to cell extension and increase in weight. The limited area of cell division in parenchyma tissue found during the first stage of tuber formation could justify the low ODC activity. The data suggest that ADC affects mainly growth processes, while ODC seems to be preferentially related to cell division.

A typical bivalve of this area, Corbula gibba, was used as bioindicator of sea-bottom pollution. Multivariate statistical analysis of the chemical data interpret concentrations and distributions of heavy metals in these sediments, attesting anthropogenic source for Cu, Pb, Cd and Zn. Using labile fractions of heavy metals in sediments as 'predictors', and length or biomass of the bivalve as dependent variables, we obtained, by a multiple regression procedure, a predictive model showing the influence of metals on this benthic organism of this polluted area.

    Notes: Summary Two patients with coexistent Down's syndrome and gout are described. Although increased serum urate levels are frequently reported in Down's syndrome, only a few such patients have been described with concomitant gout. In our patients no significant alterations of the purine salvage pathway were found, and the turnover parameters of uric acid, determined by means of a14C-labeled uric acid study, were consistent with the metabolic findings observed in normoexcretor gouty patients.
