Culture supernatants from dogfish leucocytes, exposed to the Ca2+ ionophore A23187, were analyzed for eicosanoid production by gas chromatography-electron capture mass spectrometry. Consistently high levels of the prostaglandins (PG) D2, F2α and E2 were produced, while thromboxane B2 and leukotriene B4 were found in smaller amounts. No 6-oxo PGF1α, a degradation product of prostacyclin, or 13,14-dihydro-15-oxo-PGF2α, a metabolite of PGE2 and PGF2α, were detected. The results are compared with similar experiments using mammalian leucocytes.
